Popular Culture and Libraries:Monday, January 14,11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. will discuss the group’s contribution to the Popular Culture issue of The Acquisition Librarian, and their panel discussion at 1991 Popular Culture Association’s national meeting. The group will also be holding election for chair, vicechair, secretary, and two other steering committee positions.
Public Relations in Academic Libraries:Sunday, January 13, 2:00-4:00 p.m. “Friends Groups in Academic Libraries” will be the topic of discussion. Michael Haeuser, director of learning resources and head librarian at the Folke Bernadotte Memorial Library at Gustavus Adolphus College, and Sandy Dolnick, executive director of the Friends of Libraries USA, will be the featured speakers. Both have extensive experience in working with friends groups in academic settings and will focus on the increasingly important role of these groups in fundraising.
Research:Monday, January 14, 2:00-4:00 p.m. will hold a brainstorming session for future projects to follow ALA Annual in 1991.
Science and Technology Section:Saturday, January 12, 2:00-4:00 p.m., the General Discussion Group will deal with “Collection Development and Acquisition in the Sciences,” on Monday, January 14, 2:00-4:00 p.m. the College Science Librarians Discussion Group will discuss, “Using Student Staff in College Science Libraries;” Saturday, January 12, 2:00-4:00 p.m. the Science Databases Discussion Group will focus on “Increasing Electronic Information Costs, Decreasing Information Budgets: Are you Caught in the Financing Squeeze?” and Sunday, January 13, 8:00-10:00 p.m. the Heads of Science and Technology libraries invite everyone to join them in discussing “Overcoming Science Engineering Stereotypes in Dealing with Central Library Administrators” and “Coping with Facilities Problems and Constraints in Space.”
Undergraduate Librarians:Monday, January 14, 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. will discuss “Changing Pattern of Use: The Effect on Collection Development in Undergraduate Libraries.” The group will focus on remote access catalogues in undergraduate libraries and their effect on student access; extension of library resources beyond the library; the challenges of online circulation; document delivery systems, and how these changing patterns of circulation will effect library collections in the future.
ULS Current Topics Discussion Group:Saturday, January 12, 2:00-4:00 p.m. will discuss “Recruitment: Looking for New Directions.” The focus will be on difficulties university libraries are encountering in filling positions at all levels with qualified individuals, the causes of this problem and possible solutions. Speakers: Maureen Sullivan, Yale University, and Gisela Webb, Arizona State University.
