H. Joanne Harrar

Dr. H. Joanne Harrar assumed the post of director of libraries at the University of Maryland at College Park early in September.

Dr. Harrar succeeds Howard Rovelstad, who retired in June after a thirty-five-year association with the University of Maryland. Dr. Harrar received her B.A. from Oberlin College and M.L.S. and Ph.D. from Rutgers University, and brings to her new position a wealth of experience. She was assistant to the director, Columbia University Library,

from 1961 to 1963. From 1963 to 1970, Dr. Harrar was professor of library science at Winthrop College, Rockhill, South Carolina. In 1971 she was appointed associate director of libraries at the University of Georgia.

Dr. Harrar is a member of the Southeastern Library Association and has served as editor of the Southeastern Librarian since 1972. She is a member of the ACRL Board of Directors and of ALA Council and was for several years on the Editorial Board of College & Research Libraries.

PamelaW. Reeves has been appointed as- sociate director of the Center of Educational Resources, Eastern Michigan University, effective June 2, 1975.

Since 1965, Ms. Reeves has been on the library staff at Cuyahoga Community College, Metropolitan Campus, in Cleveland, Ohio, where she attained the rank of associate librarian for administration and served for a time as acting campus librarian. Her duties have included readers’ services, book selection, development and monitoring of automated procedures, and administration.

During a sabbatical leave in 1971/72, she conducted an extensive survey of community college library practices resulting in the publication of “Junior College Libraries Enter the Seventies” in College & Research Libraries (January 1973).

Ms. Reeves came into the library field via information retrieval, having worked with the Western Reserve University Center for Documentation and Communication Research during the early 1960s. While at WRU she was the principal author of The Library of Tomorrow— Today; An Information Service of Educational Research Materials (Center for Documentation and Communication Research, Western Reserve University, 1962), an Office of Education-sponsored study which generated ERIC. She is also the author of a chapter on “Analysis and Searching of Education Research Literature” in Information Retrieval in Action (WRU Press, 1963).

Ms. Reeves has a B.A. degree from Smith College, an M.A. in history from Western Reserve University, and an M.S.L.S. from Western Reserve. Her M.A. thesis on Lake Erie history was published in Inland Seas, the quarterly journal of the Great Lakes Historical Society, during 1958/59.

A member of ALA, SLA, and the Council on Library Technology, she served as an SLA chapter officer in 1973/74. She has also been active in local politics and in various campus organizations.

RETIREMENTS

On June 30, five long-term members holding major positions retired from the library of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. They are Dr. Berta Becerra, Latin American bibliographer; Dr. Harry Bergholz, chief bibliographer; Dr. Isaac Copeland, director, Southern Historical Collection and Manuscripts Division; Dr. Lawrence London, curator of rare books; and Charles Schliecker, assistant university librarian for management.

Fred Folmer,University Library at the University of Texas, Austin has retired after thirty years of service.

ThomasS. Harding retired on June 30 after nine years as college librarian at Washburn University of Topeka, Kansas.

After forty-four years of service, Robert T. Lentz, librarian and professor of medical bibliography and library science at Thomas Jefferson University, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, retired on June 12.

DorothyS. Rowley, periodicals librarian since 1956 at Z. Smith Reynolds Library, Wake Forest University, Winston-Salem, North Carolina, retired June 30, 1975.

LucyK. Rumble, assistant director, Colorado State University Libraries, Fort Collins, has retired effective June 30, 1975.

JeanR. Tomko retired on July 1, 1975, after fourteen years of service as reference librarian (head of teaching aids) at Albert S. Cook Library, Towson State College, Baltimore, Maryland.

CarltonP. West, librarian since 1946 at Z. Smith Reynolds Library, Wake Forest University, Winston-Salem, North Carolina, retired June 30, 1975.

DEATHS

Gladys Doolittle,who retired from Stanford University libraries in 1967, died on June 18 in La Jolla, California.

Frederick Freedman,forty-five, music librarian for the Case Western Reserve University libraries, in Cleveland, died suddenly on July 12.

Merle Pincus,until recently head of cataloging for Temple University libraries, died in Los Angeles on July 8 after a prolonged illness. She had previously been on the staff of the University of Michigan Libraries.

Hunter Stedman,forty-seven, reference librarian at Case Western Reserve University libraries passed away suddenly on June 26. ■ ■
