Ralph E. McCoy
Ralph E. McCoy has accepted an appointment as interim executive director of the Association of Research Libraries for the period January 7-June 30, 1980. He will suc- ceed John G. Lorenz, who will retire as executive director of ARL at the end of 1979.
McCoy, a native of St. Louis, is a graduate of Illinois Wesleyan University and the Uni- versity of Illinois. He was librarian and assis- tant professor of indus- trial relations at the In- stitute of Labor and In- dustrial Relations from 1949 to 1955. In 1955 he became director of libraries at Southern Illi- nois University and served in that position until 1971, when he became dean of library affairs. McCoy retired from Southern Illinois University in 1976. From July 1978 to July 1979 he was interim director at the University of Georgia Li- braries.
He is a past president of the Association of Col- lege and Research Libraries.
Robert Maloy
Robert Maloy of New York City has been ap- pointed director of Smithsonian Institution Li- braries following a two-year search to fill the position, vacant since Rus- sell Shank became di- rector of libraries at the University of California at Los Angeles.
Maloy, who began work August 27, over- sees the operations of the central library, in- cluding the Dibner Li- brary and the rare book collection, ten bureau libraries, and six major branch libraries. He also works in close cooperation with the independent libraries of the institution s four art bureaus. Smithsonian library facilities are located in Washington, Maryland, Virginia, New York, Massachusetts, and Panama.
Maloy goes to Washington from Union Theological Seminary, where he served as director of the library and professor of history for four years. During his tenure, the seminary library was automated, its buildings were renovated, and its collections were expanded. Maloy went to the seminary from the School of Theology and the Claremont Graduate School at Claremont, California, where he served for three years.
A native of Cleveland, Maloy completed undergraduate work at the University of Dayton in 1956 and received a master’s degree from the Graduate Library School of the University of Chicago in 1961. He earned his doctorate from the University of Freiburg, Switzerland, in 1966 and continued postdoctoral studies at several European universities.
Maloy is a specialist in Western medieval man- uscripts, with a particular interest in the conser- vation problems that confront research libraries.
T. John Metz
T. John Metz has been named college librar- ian and adjunct associate professor of library sci- ence at Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota. Metz has been director of the Midwest Region Library Net- work (MIDLNET) since 1975. Before that he served for nine years as director of the library at the University of Wis- consin-Green Bay, where he planned and supervised construction of the UW-Green Bay library building and personally purchased the first 60,000 vol- umes.
A graduate of Heidelberg College, Ohio, Metz earned the M.A. in music at Miami University in Ohio and the master’s in library science at the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor, where he was a library science scholar and fellow. An accomplished violinist, he has performed regularly with the Green Bay Symphony since 1967.

RETIREMENTS
Bertha Jones, science cataloger, Perkins Library, Duke University, Durham, North Carolina, retired September 30 after thirty-two years of service.
Lachlan MacRae, special adviser to the National Librarian of Canada, has retired after forty years of work in public, university, and research libraries.
Pattie B. McIntyre retired from the staff of the Reference Department, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, Library after forty years of service.
Gertrude Merritt, associate university librarian for collection development, Perkins Library, Duke University, Durham, North Carolina, retired August 31 after forty-eight years of service.
Yuri Nakata retired from her position of documents librarian, University of Illinois at Chicago Circle Library, on August 31 after thirteen years of service.
Helen Turner, head, Government Documents Department, Memphis State University Libraries, retired on October 1. She began her service at the Memphis State University Libraries in 1966 and had previously worked at Memphis and Shelby County Public Library and Information Center and at the Library of Congress.
DEATHS
Marie E. Angelotti, until recently the assistant director for library services at Florida Atlantic University, died October 17 in Boca Raton, Florida.
Ford Curtis, professor emeritus of English at the University of Pittsburgh, died on September 24. In 1960 Curtis and his wife donated to the University Libraries the Ford and Harriet Curtis Theatre Collection, composed of books, programs, and memorabilia collected over many years of avid theatergoing. Curtis served as curator from 1961 to 1975, during which time he undertook an expansion of the collection by donations from numerous theatrical sources.
Barbara Elaine Nicholson, assistant director of libraries at Miami University, Oxford, Ohio, and president-elect of the Academic Library Association of Ohio, died on August 31 in Hamilton, Ohio. She had served as physics-astronomy librarian at the University of Texas at Austin, 1968-70; head science librarian at Miami University, 1970-72; and assistant director of libraries at Miami University, 1972-79.
