Nancy H. Burkett, associate librarian of the American Antiquarian Society since 1987, has been appointed that organization’s librarian, succeeding Marcus A. McCorison. Burkett joined the Society in 1973 as assistant curator of manuscripts, then became head of readers’ services. She has served as associate librarian since 1987, and was elected to membership in the Society in 1989. Burkett received a B.A. from American University, an M.A. from Boston University, and an MLS from the University of California, Los Angeles. She has served on the boards of directors of the Northeast Document Conservation Center, Worcester Area Cooperating Libraries, the Worcester Public Library, Friends of the Worcester Public Library, and the Rare Books and Manuscripts Section of ACRL.

Paul Z. DuBois, director of the Trenton State College Library for 19 years, has been appointed dean of library services at Winthrop College in South Carolina. Dubois’s previous positions have been assistant director of the Kent State University Library (1969-72) and librarian for the New York State Historical Association (1964-69). A graduate of Hiram College in Ohio, DuBois received his MLS from Kent State in 1960. He also holds a master’s and Ph.D. in American studies from Case Western Reserve University. He is the author of Paul Leicester Ford, An American Man of Letters and co-editor of Reading and the Art of Librarianship.

Charles E. Kratz, assistant dean of public services at Hofstra University’s Axinn Library until September 1991, was appointed director of the University of Scranton’s Library, which will be housed in a new $13.3 million, five-story building which will open in early 1992. Kratz previously served as associate director of the Rider College Library, and as head of public services for both the University of Missouri-Kansas City and the University of New Haven, Connecticut. He is an active member of ALA and has served on or chaired several committees of ACRL and the Library Administration and Man- agement Association. He is also vice-president of the New York Metropolitan Chapter of ACRL. Kratz earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Notre Dame, and an MLS from the University of Maryland.

Gary A. Lewis, director of library and media services at North Adams State College in Massa- chusetts until August 1991, is the new dean of libraries at Central Washington University in Ellensburg. Lewis earned a bachelor’s in sociology from Ohio University, an MLS from Western Michigan University, and a Ph.D. in higher educa- tion administration from Virginia Polytechnic In- stitute and State University. He served for 10 years as assistant director for technical services at Radford University in Virginia. The author of many profes- sional articles, Lewis is the editor of Learning at Risk: A Long-Range Plan for the Improvement of Massachusetts Public Higher Education Libraries, published in 1990 by the Massachusetts Board of Regents of Higher Education.

Edwin Joseph Saeger, rare book librarian at the Phoenix Public Library since 1987, has been appointed head of the Rare Book Department at the Free Library of Philadelphia, one of the largest collections of rare books in a public library in the country. Saeger previously worked as an adjunct professor at Ari- zona State University in the Arizona Center for Medieval and Renais- sance Studies, and as special collections cata- loger for the Haw- thome-Longfellow Li- brary at Bowdoin Col- lege in Maine. A 1968 graduate of St. Joseph’s University, Saeger re- ceived his master’s in English literature in 1979 from Villanova University, and his MLS in 1979 from Drexel University.

Elfreda A. Chatman, associate professor at the University of North Carolina (UNC) School of Information and Library Science, has been elected the 1991-92 president-elect of Beta Phi Mu, the international library science honor society. Chatman joined the UNC faculty in 1986 after teaching at Louisiana State University. She is also active in ALA, the Association for Library and Information Science Education, and the North Carolina Library Association. She has also been elected chair of ALA's Library Research Round Table for 1992-93.

Sandra Hackett, circulation/reserve assistant at the Scholes Library, part of the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University, recently received the Trustees Award from the South Central Research Li- brary Council (SCRLC) for rendering exceptional service to libraries in the south central region of New York state. Hackett initiated the SCRLC Li- brary Assistants Advisory Committee in 1980 and served as its president. In 1988 she started the organization of New York State Library Assistants, served as its president, and received its Ray Murray Award for outstanding service to library assistants.

The International League of Antiquarian Booksellers met recently in Copenhagen and elected the following new committee members: Anton Gerits (Netherlands), president; Godebert M. Reiss (Germany), vice-president; Helen R. Kalin (Canada), secretary; Poul Jan Poulsen (Denmark), treasurer; Raymond Kilgariff (Great Britain), Gerard Oberle (France), and Bernard M. Rosenthal (United States), committee members.

Lisa Pillow has been awarded the Kent State/ Ohio State University Joint Minority Fellowship in Library and Information Science. Pillow graduated from OSU in 1989 with a B.A. in economics and has been the recipient of an OSU Minority Scholars Scholarship and Honorary, a CIC Summer Research Opportunities Program Award, and a Black American Scholar Award.

James H. Sweetland, associate professor at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee School of Library and Information Science, has been awarded the Special Service Award by the Wisconsin Library Association for his many years of visible leadership in the library profession. Sweetland has been very active in professional associations on a state and national level. He is currently president of the Reference and Adult Services Division of ALA, and has served on the editorial board of RQ. He has also written many articles, reviews, abstracts, book chapters, conference papers, and monographs.

Patricia Yocum, librarian at the University of Michigan, has begun her term as the 1991-92 president of the Michigan Chapter of the Special Libraries Association. Yocum’s previous positions were at Wayne State University and Michigan State University. She has also acted as a consultant to several academic libraries, as well as to the Library of Michigan.

Dora L. Zia has been named head of the Veterinary Medical Library at North Carolina State University, Raleigh.

Retirements

Mary Cope, reference librarian and chief of materials processing and conservation at the City University of New York (City), has retired after 18 years of service.

Marlin Demlinger, assistant chief for public services and collection development at the City University of New York (City), retired in September after 16 years of service.

Benedetto DiRusso, head of cataloging and reference librarian at the City University of New York (York), has retired after 24 years of service.

Robert Ford, associate librarian for reader/ information services at the City University of New York (Medgar Evers), has retired after 23 years of service.

Andy Garoogian, social science reference bibliographer, City University of NewYork (Brooklyn), retired in March after 25 years of service.

Lois Hacker, chief technical services librarian at the City University of New York (Grad Center), retired in May after 20 years of service.

Anne-Marie Hartman, head of the Serials Department at the City University of New York (Queens), retired in September after 28 years of service.

Vida Jurkus, deputy chief librarian for technical services at the City University of New York (Queens), retired in September after 28 years of service.

Cecile E. Kramer retired in September after more than 16 years as director of the Northwestern University Gaiter Health Sciences Library. She went to Northwestern in 1975 from Columbia University, where she was assistant director of the Medical Library. Kramers’s major accomplishment at NU was the expansion and strengthening of the book and journal collection, serving as the library’s collection development librarian as well as director.

Josephine Lee retired in September from the Stanford University Libraries after 24 years of service in collection development. She began her work at Stanford in the Libraries’ Resources Development Program, affiliated first with the German studies curator and then as a library specialist in the Romance Languages Section. She was also a mainstay of the acquisitions program ins in French and Italian studies.

Jane Ross Moore, chief librarian at the Graduate Center Library of the City University of New York, retired in January after 13 years of service.

Edith Phillips, associate professor of library science at Wayne State University for 23 years, retired in May and was honored with an endowed scholarship established in her name. Before joining WSU, Phillips was an English teacher and an assistant school librarian. She worked in the circulation, extension, and catalog departments at the University of Michigan and served as a librarian at the Chicago Jewish Academy. In her administrative career, she worked at the Kent County Library in Michigan, the Michigan Department of Education, and the Library of Michigan.

Pauline Richmond, cataloger at the City University of New York (Queens), retired in September after 29 years of service.

Vivian Roswick, cataloger at the City University of New York (Queens), retired in September after 14 years of service.

Vγvian Sessions, chief librarian at the City University of New York (Staten Island), retired in June after 9 years of service.

Catherine Sestay, head of cataloging at the City University of New York (Queensborough), retired in February after 23 years of service.

William Shank, music reference librarian at the City University of New York (Grad Center), retired in January after 21 years of service.

George Simor, chief gifts librarian at the City University of New York (Grad Center), retired in May after 20 years of service.

Harry R. Skallerup, former director of Florida Atlantic University (FAU) Libraries (1977-1986), retired in October after 37 years in academic libraries and the antiquarian book trade. His library career includes positions at the University of Illinois, Southern Illinois University, University of Iowa, and the U.S. Naval Academy. At FAU he was involved in the planning of an addition to the library building, which doubled its size, and in the successful automation of the library as a participant in the Florida Center for Library Automation. After completion of the new building, Skallerup stepped down as director and left administration in 1989 to return to cataloging. A graduate of the U niversity of Minnesota Library School, Skallerup is the author of Books Afloat and Ashore, a history of maritime libraries, as well as several articles in professional, scientific, and scholarly publications.

Sherwood Smith, deputy chief and reference librarian at the City University of New York(BMCC), retired in January after 17 years of service.

Maudine B. Williams, head librarian of the Herron School of Art Library at Indiana-Purdue University of Indianapolis, retired in September.

Sam Wood has retired after 30 years in the Catalog Department at the University of Nevada, Reno. He had been a librarian for 10 years at the Missouri State Historical Society before joining UNR. His major contributions to the library were overseeing the reclassification project, the interfiling of the Dewey and LC card catalogs, the Laser/ Quest project for getting serials quickly into WolfPAC, and the cataloging of serial publications.
