ACRL INSTITUTES FREE CONSULTANT EXCHANGE

Have you considered lately that:

Every library has at least one area of services or processing that is not completely satisfactory.

A librarian from another institution might be helpful in improving those areas of concern. At least, he or she could provide a different perspective.

Most libraries have limited funds for bringing in consultants.

By an exchange of expertise, both libraries would benefit at minimal cost.

Beginning September 1, 1981, the ACRL office will provide a clearinghouse for the exchange of free consulting services. ACRL will maintain a file of librarians who are willing to provide their services on an exchange basis. When a library wants someone to help in a particular area, ACRL will supply names from its file.

ACRL assumes no responsibility for the negotiations between librarians and institutions. Neither does it endorse or recommend the persons who are listed in the Free Consultant Exchange (FCE) file. ACRL will act solely as a switching agent. To list your name in the FCE file follow the guidelines below:

All notices should be submitted on 3" x 5" typewritten index cards, with consultant’s telephone number. The information should include the following:

1) Areas of expertise, e.g., CIRCULATION SYSTEMS. Type in capital letters and (optional) add an asterisk after the chief specialization.

2) Training and experience. As brief and specific as possible: e.g., MLS, Ph.D. (LS), Columbia; 17 state contracts, 8 federal, 1964—79; 12 yrs. top-level university library experience.

3) Geographical data. Type primary region in capital letters: e.g., CENTRAL OHIO. Add notes as appropriate: Will travel out of state.

4) Address and telephone number.

5) Additional data. As appropriate: e.g., references provided.

For further information about “FCE,” contact ACRL, 50 E. Huron St., Chicago, IL 60611; (312) 944-6780. We regret we cannot accept notices by phone.
