James Estrada,director of the Trecker Library at the University of Connecticut, Hartford, was presented with the 1994 Special Achieve- ment Award by the Con- necticut Library Association.
Karen Nelson Hoyle,di- rector and curator of the Kerlan Collection of Child- ren’s Literature at the Univer- sity of Minnesota, received the 1994 Distinguished Alumni Award from St. Olaf College, which she graduated from in 1958. For the last 25 years Hoyle has built the Kerlan Collection into one of the largest such reposi- tories in the world. In 1992 she received an honorary doctorate from the University of St. Thomas and the Minnesota Library Association’s Distinguished Achievement Award.
Mohammed Aman,dean of the School of Li- brary and Information Science at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, was awarded the Black Caucus of the American Library Asso- ciation (BCALA) Leader- ship Award at the Sec- ond National Confer- ence of African Ameri- can Librarians in August.
Aman is a founding member of BCALA.
Gladys Smiley Bell,co- ordinator of electronic information services at Kent State University, Ohio, received the 1994 Distinguished Service to the Profession Award from BCALA. The awards are given to librarians, educators, and trustees who have shown distinguished service to the profession, scholarship, service to the community, and active par- ticipation in BCALA.

Mohammed Aman
Ernie Ingles,director of li- braries at the University of Alberta, received the Out- standing Academic Librarian Award of the Canadian As- sociation of College and University Libraries, pre- sented at that society’s an- nual meeting in Vancouver. The award is based on ser- vice to the profession, the planning and implementing of exemplary library programs, research and publication, mentorship, and leadership.
Jessie L. Matthews,reference and evening librarian at Rutgers University Law Library, has been named the 1994 recipient of the Spirit of Law Librarianship Award, presented annually to the American Association of Law Libraries member who makes a contribution toward the improvement of a social condition or the increased awareness of a social concern. Matthews is being honored for her work with the Patient Learning Resource Center at the Magee Rehabilitation Hospital in Philadelphia.
William A. Moffett,director of the Hunting- ton Library in San Marino, California, was recently presented with the 1994 Alumni Achieve- ment Award at the Simmons College Graduate School of Library and Information Science’s Alumni Day.
Mary Joyce Pickett,director of library servic- es at Illinois Benedictine College, has been elected president of the LIBRAS consortium of 18 northern Illinois private academic libraries. She will serve during the 1994-95 fiscal year.
William Gray Potter,director of libraries at the University of Georgia, and Ellen Waite, university librarian at Loyola University of Chi- cago, have been elected to six-year terms on the OCLC Board of Trustees.
The Oxford Dictionary of American Legal Quo- tations(Oxford Univ. Press, 1993) by Fred Shapiro, associate librarian for public services at Yale Law School, has been named the win- ner of the 1994 Joseph L. Andrews Award by the American Association of Law Libraries.
Linda Watson,director of the Claude Moore Health Sciences Library at the University of Vir- ginia, has been appointed by Gov. George Allen to a three-year term on the State Networking Users Advisory Board. The nine-member board advises the state librarian and State Library Board on the development and direction of the Virginia Library and Information Network.

Carolyn Grayhas been named director of li- brary services at Florida Gulf Coast University. Gray has served since 1988 as associate direc- tor for public services and library development officer at Brandeis Uni- versity, where she also served as assistant direc- tor for technical services and automation, and as- sociate director for tech- nical and reader ser- vices. Before that she held positions at Western Illinois University, the University of Oklahoma, and the AMIGOS Bibliographic Council.
Carolyn Gray
Paul Kobulnickyhas been named director of university libraries at the University of Connecti- cut, Storrs. He previ- ously served as interim director of the Univer- sity Library System at the University of Pittsburgh since 1990. Kobulnicky received his B.S. in physics and math from Pennsylvania State Uni- versity, and his MLS in administration and systems analysis from the University of Pittsburgh.

Rush Milleris now director of the University Library System at the University of Pittsburgh.
Before joining Pittsburgh, Miller was dean of libraries and learning resources at Bowling Green State University (1986-1994); director of the libraries at Sam Houston State University (1982-1986); and direc- tor of library services at Delta State University (1975-1982). Long ac- tive in ALA and other professional associations, Miller has published many articles on topics like TQM, multiculturalism in libraries, and support staff development.
Paul Schrodthas been appointed director of the John W. Dickhaut Library at the Methodist School of Theology Library in Ohio.
Kevin Starr,professor of regional and urban planning at the University of Southern California (USC), has been appointed state librarian of California by Gov. Pete Wilson, who said, “Starr has a statewide and national reputation as an expert on California. Over the years, he has distinguished himself as a public librarian, a historian, a journalist, and a communications consultant.” Starr will remain on the USC faculty and will teach one course there. He previously served as city librarian of San Francisco.

Retirements
Eva L. Kiewittretired as associate dean of Regent University Library & Information Services in July after 13 years in that position. Before joining Regent, Kiewitt served as associate professor and librarian at the School of Library and Information Science at Indiana University, Bloomington. She served on many ALA and
ACRL committees, authored Evaluating Infor- mation Retrieval Systems, and coauthored the first two editions of The Directory of Curricu- lum Materials Centers. She has been named li- brarian emeritus at Regent.
Lois J. Lehmanretired in August as dean of library and information services at Regent Uni- versity in Virginia Beach, Virginia. During her 47-year career, Lehman taught at all levels and served as a librarian in public, school, and uni- versity libraries. She has been active in ALA and ACRL, coauthored the first two editions of The Directory of Curriculum Materials Centers, and served as chair of ACRL’s Education and Behavioral Sciences Section’s committee that produced The Directory of Historical Curricu- lum Collections. She has been named librarian emeritus at Regent.
Norman D. Stevensretired as director of uni- versity libraries at the University of Connecticut (UC), Storrs, in May, when he became emeri- tus director. Before join- ing UC in 1968, Stevens served as acting univer- sity librarian at Rutgers University, and acting director of university li- braries at Howard Uni- versity. He has authored or edited 12 mono- graphs, and written more than 175 articles and more than 100 “Our Profession” columns for the Wilson Library Bulletin. He is known for his writings on library humor and his collections of librariana and library postcards. He’s been a life member of ALA since 1957.
Deaths
Joseph C. Borden,serials librarian at Purdue University until his retirement in 1974, died on June 10. Borden had also served as associate librarian at the University of Arkansas (1947-1965) and on the staff of the New York Public Library.
Chalmers G. Davidson,college archivist (1975-1994) and library director (1936-1975)
Norman D. Stevensat Davidson College in North Carolina, died in June at the age of 87.
Louis Kaplan,emeritus professor, retired chief librarian of Memorial Library, and director of university libraries (1957-1971) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (UWM), died in July at the age of 85. Kaplan’s career at UWM spanned the years 1937 to 1977, interrupted by a three-year leave to serve in World War II. During that time he organized the first Reference Department of the library and played a leading role in the design of library facilities, including Memorial Library and College Library. He taught in the UWM library school until his retirement in 1977.
John Kelly,chief bibliographer at the University of Alabama since 1990, died in July. Kelly formerly served as university bibliographer and curator for special collections at the University of Southern Mississippi and as special collections reference librarian at Mississippi State University.
Patricia Miller King,Carl and Lily Pforzheimer Foundation director of Radcliffe College’s Schlesinger Library on the History of Women in America since 1973, died of lung cancer last May. King’s career at Radcliffe included overseeing a $3.4 million renovation in 1987. In 1990 the Schlesinger Library received the Distinguished Service Award from the Society of American Archivists, and in 1993 the Carl and Lily Pforzheimer Foundation contributed a $2 million gift to endow King’s position. Chair of the National Council for Research on Women’s Board from 1989 to 1992, King also served on the membership committees of the American Antiquarian Society and the Massachusetts Historical Society.
