ACRL Programs at the ALA Chicago Conference
The Association of College and Research Libraries is planning a wide range of programs at the ALA Annual Conference, which will be held June 24-30, 1978.
The main ACRL program will be cosponsored with the University Libraries Section and the College Libraries Section. It will address the topic of “A National Information Policy and the Role of the Academic Library in It.” A reception for ACRL members is planned after the program on Monday, June 26.
The Agriculture and Biological Sciences Section, a recipient of ALA special funds support for its conference program, will present Jonathan King of Massachusetts Institute of Technology speaking on the recombinant DNA issue. A reactor panel will respond to his presentation. The section plans to prepare a bibliography on the issues involved, available to attendees at that Sunday, June 25, meeting.
The Anthropology Section is planning to hold its program and business meeting on Sunday, June 25. Barton Clark will discuss the compilation of an anthropology bibliography by computer using SELGEM. Staff from the Newberry Library Center for History of the American Indian will present a program on its activities on June 27, 2:00-4:00 p.m.
The Asian and African Section is planning a joint program with the International Relations Round Table to discuss bibliographic control on Tuesday afternoon, June 27.
The Bibliographic Instruction Section is having a panel of university and library administrators, faculty members, and library instruction libraries address the topic of “The Politics of Library Instruction.”
Round table discussions will provide an opportunity for attendees to take an active role in the program, which will be held on Tuesday, June 27, from 2:00-6:00 p.m.
The College Libraries Section is planning a brief membership meeting on Wednesday, June 28, at 10:00 a.m. Following the membership meeting, ther will be discussion groups addressing the topic “Future Directions for the ACRL College Libraries Section.”
The Community and Junior College Libraries Section is cosponsoring an all-day program with the Public Library Association on Sunday, June 25. In addition, tours of community college libraries in the area have been arranged.
The Education and Behavioral Sciences Section will meet Tuesday, June 27, from 10:00 a.m. to noon to hear a speaker from the Education Commission of the States.
The Law and Political Science Section has arranged a tour of City Hall, with several speakers from city government talking about their information needs. The Municipal Reference Library and the Cook County Law Library also will be visited. The program will conclude with a luncheon at which the group will be addressed by a city alderman. This program will take place from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 27.
The Rare Books and Manuscripts Section, in addition to its preconference program in New Haven, is holding an afternoon of activities at the Chicago Historical Society. The Tuesday, January 27, 2:00-6:00 p.m. program includes a visit to the Historical Society galleries, the library, and a reception.
The University Libraries Section will provide a forum for discussion of the proposed “University Library Standards” on Tuesday, June 27, from 10:00 a.m. to noon.
The Undergraduate Librarians Discussion Group will focus its program on “The Mission of the Undergraduate Library,” Sunday, June 25, 10:00 a.m. to noon.
