James Cassaro,assistant music librarian at Cornell University’s Music Library, has been appointed treasurer of the Music Library Association (MLA) effective October 1994. Active in MLA, Cassaro has served as video review editor for NOTES, member-at-large of the board of directors, fiscal officer, and chair of several subcommittees.

Sushan Chinand Janice Mathews have been selected by the National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC) as the two Fellows in Archival Administration for 1994-95. The fellowships support advanced administrative training for archivists who already have work experience and graduate education in their field. Chin is an archivist with the New York City Department of Records & Infonnation Services, Municipal Archives Division. She will work at the Minnesota Historical Society in Minneapolis. Mathews is an archivist with the Carl Albert Center Congressional Archives at the University of Oklahoma, Norman. She will work at the University of Washington, Seattle.

Frank Kurt Cylke,director of the National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped (NLS) of the Libraiy of Congress, was presented the Baker Medal at the June meeting of the Management Group, Canadian National Institute for the Blind (CNIB) in New Brunswick. Cylke was honored for his close, synergistic, professional working relationship with CNIB; the development of U.S./Canada technological exchanges; and international sales and purchases of audio and braille books.

Cylke was also honored recently as this year’s choice to receive the Joseph W. Lippincott

Award bestowed by ALA for a lifetime of distinguished li- brarianship. Under Cylke’s direction the number of NLS users has increased to more than 700,000 people, and the budget has grown from $9-9 million in 1973 to near- ly $43 million in 1994. “Kurt Cylke has spent the past 20 years providing exception- al service to visually and physically impaired per- sons,” said Librarian of Con- gress James H. Billington. “I join the ALA in congratulating him on his dis- tinguished achievement.”

Elisabeth H. Rebman,reference librarian at the University of California, Berkeley, Music Libraiy, has been appointed placement officer of the Music Library Association (MLA). Rebman has previously served MLA as chair of the Online Reference Services Subcommittee and the Subcommittee on MARC Tag 028, and as a member of several committees.

Deborah Tucker,multicultural librarian at Wayne State University (WSU), Detroit, recently received a Minority Achiever’s Award at the Annual Minority Achiever’s luncheon, sponsored by the YMCA. The award is given to minority men and women in business, industry, education, and labor to honor significant contributions to the workplace and the Detroit community. Tucker has been at WSU since 1991. Her duties as multicultural librarian include collection development and coordinating cultural diversity programs for the library system. She also conducts many lectures on multicultural issues both at WSU and around the state of Michigan.

Appointments

Janice W. Bain-Kerrhas been appointed university college librarian and associate dean of libraiy services at Troy State University, Troy, Alabama. She was formerly head of access services and coordinator of LINE, the library’s feebased information service, at the University of Central Florida, Orlando. A graduate of Davis and Elkins College, Bain-Kerr received her MLS from the University of Maryland. She is chair of the Special Libraries Association’s (SLA) Social Science Division, and previously served as chair of SLA’s Transportation Division. A member of ACRL’s Fee-Based Information Service Center in Academic Libraries (FISCAL) Discussion Group, Bain-Ken' is also a member of the Flor- ida Library Association.

Mia W. Basshamhas been named director of learning resources at Luzerne County Commu- nity College in Nanticoke, Pennsylvania.

Hiram L. Davis,director of libraries at Michi- gan State University (MSU), has been appoint- ed deputy librarian of Congress. As the library’s chief operating officer,

Davis will supervise the library’s day-to-day in- ternal operations, and the library’s seven ser- vice unit heads will re- port to him. Davis’s 20- year career in librar- ianship has included positions at the Univer- sity of Kansas, Muskin- gum College, Kalama- zoo Valley Community

College, and the University of Oklahoma. He was head of the Undergraduate Library at the University of California, Los Angeles; dean of libraries at the University of the Pacific; and dean of the University Libraiy at New Mexico State University. He became director of librar- ies at MSU in 1989. A graduate of Missouri Val- ley College, Davis earned his MLS from Kansas State Teachers College in 1969, and his Ph.D. from the University of Michigan in 1984. He has been active in ALA and ACRL, and helped establish the Michigan Research Libraries Tri- angle Consortium in 1992.

Robert P. Holleyhas been appointed director of Wayne State University’s (WSU) Library and Information Science Program. He had served as interim director of the program since December 1993- Before that he served as associate dean of the WSU Libraries and assistant director for technical services at the University of Utah. James J. Kopphas been named director of the University of Portland’s Wilson W. Clark Memorial Library. For the past three years Kopp has served as vice-pres- ident at P.S.S. Tapestry Inc. of Reston, Virginia.

From 1989 to 1991 he worked as systems li- brarian at Washington State University, Pull- man. He also held posts at Columbia University and the National Libraiy of Medicine. Kopp holds a bachelor’s de- gree from the University of Oregon, a master’s degree in history from the University of Portland, an MLS from Catho- lic University of America, and a Ph.D. in Ameri- can studies from George Washington University.

Rona Ostrow,former associate dean of libraries for public services at Adelphi University, has been appointed chief librarian of the Thomas J. Shanahan Library at Marymount Manhattan College, New York City. Ostrow is currently a doctoral student at Rutgers University School of Communication, Information, and Library Studies.

Karen S. Beckhas been appointed law reference librarian at the University of Oregon, Eugene.

Richard Bleileris now reference librarian/ selector for the humanities at the University of Connecticut, Storrs.

Deaths

Olga Torres-Seda Loomis,interlibrary loan and reference librarian at Lehman College, New York, died May 11. Coauthor of Caribbean Women Novelists (1991) and The Tu›enti- eth-Century Puerto Rican Short Story, Loomis was responsible for assistance to Lehman’s Spanish-speaking community and for its Span- ish-language collections.

George Masterton,former collection devel- opment librarian at Wayne State University (WSU), Detroit, died recently at the age of 72. Masterton began working at WSU in 1965 as a reference librarian. In 1978 he received the G. Flint Purdy Memorial Award honoring outstand- ing contributions to the WSU Library. He re- tired in 1991.

Jay Martin Poole,head librarian at the Col- lege of Santa Fe, New Mexico, died in July af- ter suffering several heart attacks. Poole served previously as assistant director for collection and bibliographic ser- vices, and assistant di- rector of collection de- velopment at Texas A&M University; assis- tant university librarian for public services at the University of California,

Irvine; and editor of Choice magazine. He also held positions at the University of Texas at Austin, the State Uni- versity of New York at Buffalo, and the Uni- versity of Washington, Seattle. A graduate of the University of Tulsa, Poole earned his MLS from the University of Oklahoma. He was ac- tive in ALA and the Texas Libraiy Association, for which he edited the Texas Library Journal. And he was currently serving on ACRL’s Col- lege and Research Libraries editorial board. ■
