Dr. Fred Blum

DB. FRED BLUMhas been named director of the University Library and Center of Educational Resources at Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti, Michigan, effective June 1974. Dr. Blum holds degrees from Oberlin, Ohio University, and the University of Iowa (Ph.D., musicology, 1959), as well as the MSLS from the Catholic University of America.

He did a brief stint with the New York-Public Library before two years of post-doctoral study and teaching in Europe. In 1961 he joined the staff of the Library of Congress, serving first as a reference librarian in the Music Division and then as editor of the National Register of Microform Masters in the Union Catalog Division. Since 1967 he has been with the Catholic University of America libraries, first as head of Special Services Department and, from 1971, as head of Technical Services Department. During this time he was involved in various library activities of the Consortium of Washington Area Universities.

Dr. Blum is currently ALA’s representative to American National Standards Institute Committee Z39 on Library Work, Documentation, and Related Publishing Practices, a member of ACRL’s Publications Committee, the coordinator of ACRL’s search for a new editor for College & Research Libraries, chairman of the Music Library Association’s Audiovisual and Microform Committee, District of Columbia representative to the Potomac Technical Processing Librarians, an active member of DCLA, and past-president of Beta Phi Mu. He has published widely in the fields of musicology and librarianship.

Dr. Blum is married to the former Beula Ei- senstadt (Ed.D., University of Michigan).

DONALD C. ANTHONY,associate university librarian at Columbia University since 1969, has been appointed director of libraries at Syracuse University, effective July 1. Anthony will succeed Warren N. Boes, who was director from 1968 to last July 1, when he took a similar position at the University of Georgia, Athens. Metod M. Milac, acting director of libraries at Syracuse, will return to his position as assistant director in July.

Anthony, who was forty-eight on March 29, joined Columbia in 1966 as assistant director of libraries. For five years before that he was associate librarian and head of the manuscripts and history section of the New York State Library at Albany. He has been librarian at the Fargo, North Dakota, public library and the library at Wilmington, Delaware, which he established to house the archives of E. I. du- Pont de Nemours & Co.

He earned his bachelor’s degree in 1951 and his master of library science in 1954 at the University of Wisconsin and has studied at the University of Geneva, Switzerland; American University; and the Graduate School of Public Administration at SUNY Albany. In 1970-71 he studied the use of audiovisual materials in university libraries under a grant fr6m the Council on Library Resources. His wife, Mary, is also a librarian. They have three children.

RETIREMENTS

MYRTLE M. CARROLLrecently retired from the library of FLORIDA STATE UNIVERSITY, Tallahassee, Florida. She had been on the staff for sixteen years serving in both the humanities and the social science divisions. For the past seven years she had been head of the Reference Division.

ELEANORE FRIEDGOODrecently retired after more than eighteen years of UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA AT LOS ANGELES service, most of which time she was a member of the cataloging staff of the University Library.

MARY E. POTTS,head of the Catalog Department at the UNIVERSITY OF OKLAHOMA libraries, will retire in July of this year. Miss Potts has been in the Catalog Department since 1930.

DEATH

CLIFFORD K. SHIPTONdied recently. Mr. Shipton had retired in 1969 as custodian of HARVARD UNIVERSITY Archives, but he was still active as a historian, and, in particular, as the author of recent volumes of Sibley’s Harvard Graduates.
