Profiles

Jerrold Lee Brooks has been named executive director of the St. Louis Mercantile Library, Missouri. He served 10 years as the executive director for the Historical Foundation of the Presbyterian and Reformed Churches in Montreat, North Carolina.

Brooks is a graduate of Davidson College. He holds degrees from Union Theological Seminary in Virginia (B.D.), Indiana University (M.A.), and Tulane University, where he received his Ph.D. in American history.

Pauline Cochrane, head of the Catholic University of America (CUA), Library and Information Science School, Washington, D.C., has been named acting dean of the School.

She began at CUA in 1988 as a visiting ordinary professor. She spent most of her academic career at Syracuse University School of Information Studies, where she taught in the master’s and doctoral program from 1966 to 1985.

From 1985 to 1988 she lived in Papua New Guinea with her husband. While there, under a grant from the International Development and Research Center, she studied library education in New Guinea and Fiji in 1986 and 1987.

Cochrane received an MLS from Rosary College and a bachelor’s degree from Illinois College. She was named to Phi Beta Kappa and received the American Society for Information Science’s outstanding information science teacher award in 1981, and the outstanding alumni award from Rosary College in 1988.

Robert A. Foley has been named director of the Fitchburg State College Library. He has served as reference librarian and archivist at Fitchburg State since 1979.

He established and maintained the college archives, the manuscripts collection, the graphics collections, and the rare and historical books collection. In addition, he was in charge of interlibrary loans and collection development for several academic departments.

Foley is a graduate of Stonehill College and earned his MLS from Western Michigan University. He is a member of a number of professional organizations, including the American Library Association and the New England Archivists. He received a distinguished service award from Fitchburg in 1982.

Clarence Toomer, library director at Shaw University, Raleigh, North Carolina, since 1980, has been appointed director of library services at Greensboro College, North Carolina, effective July 5, 1988.

Toomer holds a bachelor’s degree in sociology from Livingstone College, an MLS from North Carolina Central University, and is a doctoral candidate at North Carolina State University in adult education.

He is a member of ALA, ACRL, and the Black Caucus of ALA. Currently, he serves on the Historical Commission of ACRL’s College Libraries Section. He has served on the executive board of North Carolina Library Association’s College and University Section and the editorial board of North Carolina Libraries.

Burton M. Wheeler, professor of English and religious studies at Washington University in St. Louis, has been named interim dean of the Washington University Library Services.

Wheeler, who also chairs the university’s Committee on Religious Studies, was dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Washington University from 1966 to 1978. A member of the Washington University faculty since 1956, he served as assistant chairman of the Department of English from 1960 to 1962, He also served as chairman of the search committee for the Gloria M. Goldstein professor of Jewish history at the university. He chaired the Washington University Library Council from 1980 to 1982.

A specialist in 19th- and 20th-century literature with an emphasis on fiction, Wheeler has written numerous articles and book reviews based on literary and religious themes. He is the recipient of several awards, including the distinguished Faculty Award during the 1972 Founders Day ceremonies and the Council of Students of Arts and Sciences (CSAS) Award for Administrative Service to Students (1978). He also received a teaching award form CSAS last year.

He served as director of the university’s “T.S. Eliot: A Centennial Appraisal” (September 30-0c- tober 2). He is a member of the Society for Values in Higher Education and the American Association of University Professors. And also a member of the United Chapters of Phi Beta Kappa committee on qualifications and served on the Association of American Medical Colleges’ National Study of General and Professional Education of the Physician. He has chaired numerous accreditation teams of the North Central Association of Colleges.

Wheeler holds a bachelor’s and a master’s degree from the University of South Carolina and a doctorate from Harvard University.

People in the news

Norman Horrocks, Scarecrow Press, presented the Third Annual Whim Creek Lecture to the Wes- tralian Library Federation at the Alexander Library Building in Perth, on August 22. His topic was “Transforming a State Library: Responding to the Information Needs of Business and Industry.” While in Perth he also spoke to the Library Association of Australia (Western Australia Branch) and to the students at the Department of Library and Information Studies, Curtin University of Technology.

Stephen E. Young is now circulation librarian in the Tarlton Law Library at the University of Texas, Austin.

Eiji Yutani is now Japanese studies librarian at the University of California, San Diego.

Thomas Zantow has been appointed music cataloger at Bowling Green State University, Ohio.

Retirements

Frank Brey, associate librarian at Indiana University, Bloomington, retired in July.

Norma Claussen, science librarian, mathematics, mechanical engineering at the University of California, Santa Barbara, retired September 30. She will continue to work part-time as science librarian in the Sciences-Engineering Library.

Eleanor E. Covalesky, former cataloger at the School of Law, University of San Francisco, California, retired on June 30.

Christopher Hail, head of public services at the Frances Loeb Library, Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts, retired on June 30 after 20 years of service. He began his career at Harvard in 1967 as a library assistant in the Map Collection. In 1971 he transferred to a position as a cataloger and was later promoted to the post from which he retired. He was an active member, officer, and speaker in numerous professional organizations, including the Massachusetts Committee for the Preservation of Architectural Records (President, 1987-1988), the Council of Planning Librarians, the Association of Architectural Librarians, the Association of Architectural School Librarians, and the Art Libraries Society of North America.

Nina McMaster, librarian at Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts, retired in June after serving 35 years. She began her career at Harvard in October 1954 in the Office of the Corporation, in 1956 she transferred to the Physics Department as a secretary, and several years later she began to work in the Physics Department Library on a part-time basis. In 1959, she was named departmental librarian before her appointment as librarian.

Virginia Pratt, head of the Library School Library at the University of California, Berkeley, retired in April.

Helen L. Snoke, since July 1988 acting associate dean of the School of Information and Library Studies, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, will retire at the end of the year. Snoke has been a member of the faculty since 1969. She has specialized in the teaching of the school library media curriculum and was director of an experimental project in school library media education funded by the Knapp Foundation and administered by the American Library Association. She holds a BA in drama and English, an MLS, and a Ph.D in education and library science, all from the University of Oklahoma. She has been active in many professional organizations, including serving as president of the American Association of School Librarians in 1974-75, and chair of two major committees of the American Library Association, the Publishing Committee in 1981-82, and the Standards Committee, 1986-present. Currently she is a member of ALA Council and the Board of Directors of the American Association of School Librarians. She has also served on various committees within the University.

Elizabeth Todd, head of the Catalog Department in the Bancroft Library at the University of California, Berkeley, retired in July.

Deaths

Raimund E. Matthis, technical services librarian in Collins Library at the University of Puget Sound, Tacoma, Washington, since 1963 died on September 15. He was an instrumental figure in converting the library collection from the Dewey Classification to Library of Congress by 1970. In 1971 he was the co-author of Adopting the Library of Congress Classification System (Bowker). He was responsible for redesigning the card catalog, and was involved in the library retrospective conversion project with OCLC, and the planning and preparation for a public access catalog as the basis for complete library automation.

William P. Timlake, former president of the Research Libraries Group, Chicago, Illinois, died on September 21. Timlake became RLG’s president in February 1987. During his brief tenure he set in motion a series of initiatives central to the future development of the organization. Timlake had previously spent 22 years with the IBM Corporation.
