Toni Carbo,dean of the School of Information Sciences (SIS) at the University of Pittsburgh (Pitt) since 1986, has become an honorary fellow in the National Federation of Abstracting and Information Services (NFAIS). The NFAIS Board bestowed this honor on Carbo because of her “lifelong contribution to the information industry.” Prior to joining Pitt, she was executive director of the National Commission on Libraries and Information Science and a member of the U.S. Advisory Council on the National Information Infrastructure. She is past president of the Association for Library and Information Science Education and a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Carbo is also a fellow of the Institute of Information Scientists and the Special Libraries Association. She was president of the American Society for Information Science, and received its Watson David Award and the Distinguished Service Award from the Pennsylvania Library Association in 1995. She chairs the Board of the Center for Democracy and Technology, is vice chair of Three Rivers Connect, and is a member of the Board of the Pennsylvania Information Highway Consortium. She is co-chair of the U.S. National Committee for the International Federation for Information and Documentation and chairs its Infostructures and Policies Committee.
Connell B. Gallagher,director for Research Collections at the University of Vermont, was elected a fellow of the Vermont Academy of Arts and Sciences for having made an impact on the life and conditions in Vermont. Gallagher’s work as an educator responsible for training students and archivists in Vermont and New England, his building of collections (particularly congressional papers), and his service to the archival and library communities were noted in the citation.
Sandy G. Yee,academic department head at Eastern Michigan University (EMU), was named the Michigan Library Association (MLA) Librarian of the Year for 1999. Yee, who is responsible for the operations of the EMU Bruce T. Halle Library, was recognized for her contributions to the University Library, local and regional libraries, the MLA (she was president 1993-94), the Michigan Library Consortium, and contributions to many state programs. Yee successfully planned and implemented the first automated storage and retrieval system in the state.

Appointments
Maureen Beckhas been appointed director of Library Services at Villa Julie College in Stevenson, Maryland. Before joining Villa Julie, Beck served more than 12 years at the Milton Eisenhauer Library at Johns Hopkins University. She worked as reference coordinator, coordinator of Electronic Information, and served as the library’s Webmaster. She previously worked at the University of Pittsburgh. Beck is a member of the ALA, the American Society for Information Sciences, and the Maryland Library Association.
Wanda V. Dolehas been named director of the library at Washburn University in Topeka, Kansas. Since 1991, she has served as an assistant director for Public Services and Collections at SUNY, Stony Brook. Prior to this position she was head librarian at Abington College of Pennsylvania State University.

Retirements
Amy Bernath,manager of Continuing Education and Training with SOLINET, has retired after ten years of service. During her years with SOLINET,
Bernath facilitated the first regional continuing education needs assessment survey in the Southeast and coordinated the planning, development, and implementation of the Leadership in the Management of Information and Communication
Technologies: An Institute for Rural Public Librarians. Within the ALA, Bernath has served as president and on the Board of Director for CLENERT (the Continuing Library Education Network and Exchange Round Table). She is also a member of the Southeastern Library Association.

Terry Leehas retired from the Engineering/ Transportation Libraiy at the University of Michigan after 22 years of service.
Leslie R. Morrishas retired from Niagara University (NU) after 14 years of service as director of libraries. Before his position at NU, he was director of the libraries at Xavier University of Louisiana (1975-85). Some of his other academic experiences include: head of Technical Services at SUNY, Fredonia; head cataloger at East Stroudsburg University; cataloger at St. Francis College in Pennsylvania; and cataloger at Indiana University in Pennsylvania. Morris is the author of numerous professional articles and he will continue to edit his two major publications the Interlibrαry Loan Policies Directory and the Journal of Interlibrary Loan, Document Delivery & Information Supply.
Karen Sayerhas retired, after a 32-year career at the University of Michigan, as head of the Film and Video Library.
Edward Weber,head of the Labadie Collection in the Special Collections Library, has retired after working for the University Library at the University of Michigan (UM) for more than 47 years. Weber began working in the Social Science Library as a graduate assistant in 1952, when he entered library school at UM. By I960, he had become head of the Labadie Collection. During his tenure, the collection grew sixfold, with many important acquisitions in such areas as 19th-century French and German socialism, Gay Liberation from the 1950s to the present, underground press publications, and the Civil Rights Movement.
Deaths
Sallie Ellison,55, director of the Purdy/ Kresge Library at Wayne State University, died on December 26 of hypertensive cardiovascular disease. Ellison joined Wayne State University in 1989 as assistant director of the Purdy/Kresge Library. She was named director in 1991 and served as director of Media Services from 1991 to 1996. She served on ACRL’s
International Relations Committee and was deeply committed to the Black Caucus. She was also active in the Special Libraries Association, the Michigan Library Association, the Michigan Libraries Research Triangle, and the Michigan Library Consortium.
Sallie Ellison
Kim N. Fisher, 51, Penn State University (PSU) Libraries’ first Paterno Family Librarian in Literature, died on January 7, 2000, as the result of an accident. He held a number of positions as a librarian at Virginia Commonwealth University from 1972 to 1980, then worked for a year as a reference librarian at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond. From 1981 to 1984, he was the head of the Humanities Division in the library at Oklahoma

State University. He began working at PSU in 1984 as an associate librarian in the Acquisitions Department and became humanities librarian in 1990. In 1999, he was named Paterno Family Librarian, an endowed professorship that recognizes academic excellence within the area of literature. He authored On the Screen, a film and television reference book that received recognition as an outstanding reference work. He was active in the Arts Section of ACRL, serving as the vice-chair and chair from 1991 to 1993, and most recently as chair of the Planning Committee.
Clyde C. Walton,75, nationally respected historian and librarian, died in San Jose, California on January 4, 2000, from complications related to Alzheimer’s disease.
Walton served in the U.S. Army during WWII and received the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. He later began his career as a librarian at the University of Iowa.
He also served as director of the Northern Illinois University Library (1967-78) and the University of Colorado at Boulder (1977-90), where he provided leadership in developing one of the first online catalogs (CARL) and electronic journal delivery systems (UnCover). Before moving to Northern Illinois University, Walton served as Illinois State Historian (1956-67), while also serving as executive director of Illinois State Historical Society and director of the Illinois State Historical Library. Walton received an honoraiy doctorate from Lincoln College in Illinois and a luncheon invitation to the White House with President Lyndon B. Johnson. Until his illness, he served on the boards of the Abraham Lincoln Association and the Ulysses S. Grant Association. ■
