Architectural records conference

The Conservation Center for Art and Historic Artifacts (CCAHA) and the National Park Service Museum Management Program will cosponsor a three-day conference about managing architectural records on May 3—5, 2000, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Titled “Architectural Records: Preserving and Managing the Documentation of Our Built Environment,” this conference will cover practices for collecting, preserving, and providing access to architectural documents of all types. More than 15 faculty members will make presentations about the significance and nature of such records, collecting policies, appraisal, intellectual control, preventive and remedial preservation, access methods, fundraising, and legal issues.

Registration is $150 until March 14 and $200 from March 15 to April 10. There are a limited number of reduced-fee registrations available for National Park Service staff. Getty emergency guide

The Getty Conservation Institute has produced a 280-page publication entitled Building an Emergency Plan: A Guide for Museums and Other Cultural Institutions. Valerie Dorge and Sharon Jones created the guide to serve as a workbook for developing an effective emergency plan. It has three sections: one for institution directors, one for emergency preparedness managers and one for departmental team leaders, and they address the specific responsibilities of each role. It also covers communication, training and forming teams, plus provides case studies of several disasters.

SOLINET workshops

The Southeastern Library Network, Inc. (SOLINET) is offering two workshops in March 2000. The first workshop, “Did Our Insurance Policy Say That? Risk Management for Library and Cultural Collections,” will be held on March 15 in Greenville, North Carolina. Jeanne Drewes, assistant director for Access and Preservation at Michigan State University, is the instructor.

The second workshop, “Disaster Preparedness and Recovery,” will be held on March 28-29 in Jacksonville, Florida. J. Sara Paulk, assistant director/head librarian at the Tifton County Public Library, and Vicki Stanton, preservation librarian at the University of North Florida, are the instructors.

The fee for the insurance workshop is $95 for SOLINET members and $135 for nonmembers. The fee for the disaster workshop is $135 for SOLINET members or $175 for non-members.
