Association of College & Research Libraries

In the news

—Mary Ellen K. Davis Editor-in-chief,

Whenever ACRL surveys its members they consistently rank publications and promulgation of standards as among the most valuable activities the association can undertake.

ACRL members have been very busy in these areas and I am pleased to publish in this issue two new standards.

“Standards for College Libraries” (page 175) is the first standard developed by ACRL under the new requirement that standards include input and output measures as well as outcomes assessments. The new standards provide both a qualitative and quantitative approach to assessing the effectiveness of a library and its staff in the context of the institution’s mission statement.

Recognizing the role of critical thinking in the learning process, ACRL appointed a task force consisting of both librarians and higher education administrators to develop

“Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education” (page 207).

We encourage you to use these standards and share them with your colleagues. Copies are also on the ACRL Web site (http:// for your convenience.

This issue also includes the first announcements for the winners of some of ACRL’s awards. Congratulations to Sharon Hogan, ACRL’s Academic/Research Librarian of the Year; to Ken Frazier, the Hugh C. Atkinson Memorial Award winner; and to the library staffs of North Carolina State, Wellesley College, and the College of DuPage for receiving the first Excellence in Academic Libraries award (page 188). Be sure to send in your suggestion for “Living Legends of the 20th Century” (page 191).
