Pam Spiegel

Norman Horrockshas been named the 1996 recipi- ent of the ALISE Award for Professional Contribution to Library and Information Studies Education. ALISE, the Association for Library and Information Science Educa- tion, gives this award based on evidence of regular and sustained service that pro- motes and strengthens the broad areas of library and information science educa- tion through the holding of professional offices, contributions that promote the status of library education, and leadership and initiative. Horrocks served as director of the School of Library and Information Studies and dean of the Faculty of Management at Dalhousie University, Nova Scotia, and as edi- torial vice-president of Scarecrow Press. He is now an editorial consultant for Scarecrow and part-time member of the Dalhousie SLIS.

Robert E. Schnare,director of the U.S. Naval War College Library (NWCL) in Newport, Rhode Island, was recently named recipient of the Department of the Navy Meritorius Civilian Service Award for exceptional management and leadership as the director of the NWCL since 1986.

Debora Shaw,associate dean of the Indiana University School of Library and Information Science was recently named incoming president-elect of the American Society for Information Science (ASIS). She assumed her role in October. An ASIS member for 20 years, Shaw served on the board of directors from 1990 to 1993 and has indexed the organization’s annual review since 1986.

Appointments

DavidC. Bosse has been appointed librarian of the Memorial Libraries at Historic Deerfield, Massachusetts. Bosse had served for 11 years as senior associate librarian of the William L. Clements Library at the University of Michigan.

Before that he served for two years as assistant cura- tor in the Department of Special Collections at the Newberry Library in Chi- cago. A member of the American Historical Associa- tion, the International Soci- ety for the History of Car- tography, and the Special Libraries Association, Bosse received Mellon Research Fellowships at the Virginia Historical Society in 1994, and the Massachusetts Historical Society in 1991. He is the author of Civil War Newspaper Maps: A Cartobibliography of the Northern Daily Press (Greenwood, 1993).

Richard J. Coughlinhas been named direc- tor of libraries and head of the Division of Li- braries and Museums at Northeast Missouri State University, Kirksville. He was formerly admin- istrative services librarian at Boston College.

Sheila Delacroix

Sheila Ann Delacroix,assistant dean for ref- erence and information services at Auburn University since 1992, has been appointed univer- sity librarian at the Uni- versity of Tennessee at Chattanooga. An ALA Mi- nority Fellow in 1991-92, Delacroix has also served as head of reference ser- vices at Southeastern Louisiana University (1987-91), as assistant li- brarian in the Reference Services Department at

Louisiana State University (1984-87), and as li- brary assistant in the Undergraduate Library at Duke University (1984).

Julia A. Woods,former library director at Mesa State College, has been named library director of the University/College Library at Broward Community College (BCC) in Davie, Florida. The joint facility library serves BCC, Florida Atlantic University, and Florida International University (FIU). Woods previously served in administrative positions at FIU and Bowling Green State University.

Claudia J. Morner

Claudia J. Mornerhas been named university librarian at the University of New Hampshire, Durham. She was for- merly associate univer- sity librarian for access services at Boston Col- lege (1986–1995), and Bapst librarian at Boston College (1985–1986). Be- fore that she served as li- brarian at Cape Cod Community College (1980–1985), and director of the Osterville Free Library in Massachu- setts.

David S. Zeidberg

David S. Zeidberg,head of the Department of Special Collections in the University Research Library at the University of California, Los Ange- les, has been appointed the R. Stanton and Erne- stine Avery director of the Huntington Library in San Marino, California. He is the first person to hold the newly endowed Avery chair. Zeidberg previously served as cu- rator of special collec- tions in the Gelman Library at George Washington University. Commenting on his new appointment, Zeidberg said, “It is the fulfillment of a career goal for me to direct one of the country’s great research libraries. I look forward to the opportunities and the challenges.”

Rochelle Amoresis now senior assistant librarian/science librarian at California State University, San Marcos.

Joseph Atkinsonhas been named senior assistant librarian/business librarian at California State University, San Marcos.

Steve Blackhas been named serials/reference librarian at the College of Saint Rose in Albany, New York.

Maria Krystyna Borysiewiczhas been appointed monographic cataloger/Slavic bibliographer at the University of Colorado at Boulder.

Deborah Broadwaterhas been promoted to head of technical services at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

Lisa Bruerehas been appointed coordinator for OCLC Services in MINITEX at the University of Minnesota Libraries.

Jennifer Campbellis the new multimedia librarian at Calumet College of Saint Joseph in Hammond, Indiana.

Melissa DeSantisis the new microcomputer services reference librarian at the University of Texas Health Science Center.

Carla Deweyhas been named coordinator for OCLC Services in MINITEX at the University of Minnesota Libraries.

Ann Easthamhas been appointed chemistry reference librarian and bibliographer in the Science and Engineering Library at the University of Minnesota.

Keith D. Engwalljoined the staff of the University of Texas Health Science Center as a systems librarian.

Mary Gillaspyis now information and education services librarian at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

Mary Lou Goodyearrecently began service as associate dean of libraries at the University of Kansas.

Barbara Greenmanhas been appointed science librarian at the University of Colorado at Boulder.

Maureen Hammeris the new microcomputer services manager at the University of Texas Health Science Center.

Andrew Hartis now preservation librarian in the Collection Development Department at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Carol Hendrenhas joined the College Center on Library Automation in Tallahassee, Florida, as library applications specialist.

Janine Henriis now head librarian of the Architecture and Planning Library at the University of Texas at Austin.

Lisa B. Hillhas been appointed coordinator of information services in the Education Library at Vanderbilt University.

Weiling Liuhas been named coordinator of library systems at Cleveland State University.

Theresa Menhas been appointed reference librarian in the Science and Engineering References Services Unit at the University of Minnesota Libraries.

Nancy Stimsonis now assistant librarian in the Health Sciences Library at the State University of New York at Buffalo.

Rafael Tarragohas been appointed Ibero- American studies librarian at the University of Minnesota Libraries.

Retirements

Gerard B. McCabe,director of libraries at Clarion University of Pennsylvania, retired in January after 13 years in that position. A life member of ALA and an active member of LAMA, McCabe plans to continue a career as a library consultant and editor/series advisor for Greenwood Press.

Deaths

Louise Heck-Rabi,former assistant professor of library science at Wayne State University, died in October at the age of 69. Heck-Rabi also served for many years as a public and technical librarian at several public libraries in Michigan. She was also a playwright, poet, and television/videotape producer.

Odessa B. Shain,former head of technical services in the Environmental Design Library at the University of California at Berkeley, died at the end of November at the age of 74. Shain had retired in 1986 after some 20 years of service in the library. ■
