Pam Spiegel

Jerry Campbell,university librarian at Duke University; Richard De Gennaro, Roy

E. Larson librarian of Harvard College; and Carole Moore, chief librarian of the University of Toronto, have been elected to the Research Libraries Group Board of Directors. Their terms will expire in 1997.

C. Jared Lowenstein,Ibero- American bibliographer and curator of the Jorge Luis Borges Collection at the University of Virginia, Charlottesville, was awarded the José Toribio Medina Prize in publishing for his 1993 compi- lation, A Descriptive Catalogue of the Jorge Luis Borges Collection at the University of Virginia Library (University Press of Virginia). Nearly a decade in the making, the book is an anno- tated checklist of works by and about the Ar- gentine literary giant. The award was made by SALALM during its annual conference.

Alice Hastings Murphy,library director emeritus at the University at Albany, State University of New York, was honored recently by the establishment of a new endowed scholarship fund in her name. It will provide scholarships for student library employees and full-time library staff who plan to become librarians. Murphy led the libraries from 1956 to 1970.

Rowena Olsen,McPherson College librarian, has assumed the position of president of the Kansas Library Association (KLA). Olsen has been a member of KLA for more than 20 years, and served since 1993 in the second and then first vice-president positions.

State Library, was awarded the Connecticut Library Association’s Outstanding Achievement Award for 1994.

Pamela Snelson,assistant director for automation and public services, Drew Uni- versity, has been elected to the PALINET Board of Trustees along with Eileen Hutchingham, dean of li- braries at Drexel University, and Sandra Millard, assistant director for library public services at the University of Delaware. They will serve three- year terms. Mary Ann Griffin, director of the Falvey Memorial Library at Villanova Univer- sity, was reelected to the board. PALINET con- sists of 381 member libraries from New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, and the District of Columbia.

F. Landon Greaves Jr.has been named di- rector of the Nelson Poynter Memorial Library at the University of South Florida, St. Peters- burg. Greaves has been director of libraries at Southeastern Louisiana University since 1969- He holds a bachelor’s degree in business ad- ministration from Louisiana Tech University, an MLS from Louisiana State University, and a Ph.D. in library science from Florida State University.

Patricia M. Larsen,assistant director for ac- cess services at the University of Northern Iowa, has been named director of the University of Texas at El Paso Library. In her 22-year career as a librarian, Larsen has held professional posi- tions at three academic libraries, and served as a Fulbright lecturer in Bu- charest, Romania, in 1992-93. She holds an MLS from the University of Kentucky and a master’s in business administration from Portland State University.

Barbara McFadden Allenhas been appointed director of the newly established Center for Library Initiatives of the Committee on Institutional Cooperation (CIC), an academic consortium of Big Ten universities and the University of Chicago.

Chris Andersonjoined the Commerce Library at the University of Illinois at Urbana- Champaign as visiting assistant librarian.

Suzanne Castromanhas been named to a two-year appointment as visiting minority librarian at the University at Buffalo, State University of New York.

Diane J. Chladilhas been appointed periodicals services librarian at the University of Texas-Pan American in Edinburg.

Norma Levyhas been appointed interim director of library services at William Paterson College’s Sarah Byrd Askew Library.

Johnnie Loveis now librarian I in the Reference Department at the University of Kansas Libraries.

Deaths

Scott Benjamin Birkinshaw,instructor and general reference bibliographer at Weber State University (WSU), Ogden, Utah, died in August. Birkinshaw began working at WSU in 1972 after receiving his MLS from Brigham Young

University. He received his B.A. in music from the University of Utah, and was a member of the Utah Symphony.

Richard Alan Farley,director of the National Agricultural Library in Beltsville, Maryland, from 1974 to 1983, died in September at the age of 76. Farley began his career in 1941 as assistant librarian at Beloit College. In 1946 he joined the staff of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) Library, where he became assistant director, left in 1949 to become director of libraries at Drake University, and returned to UNL in 1954 as associate director. Farley also served as professor and librarian at Kansas State Teachers College (1963-66), professor and head of the land-grant library system at Kansas State University (1966-72), and director of libraries at McGill University, Montreal (1972—74). A member of ALA for 53 years, Farley served on its Council from 1962 to 1966, and held offices in ACRL and other professional organizations.

Philip Lindell,a librarian at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) from 1957 to 1979, died September 21. Lindell served as a librarian at the University of Southern California (1953-57), and at UIUC as binding librarian, serials cataloger, and principal classifier.

Martha Jane Phillips,assistant for public services operations at the University of Texas at Austin (UTA), died in May. She had worked in the UTA General Libraries since 1976.

Iona Wells Speas,former reference librarian at Wake Forest University, died in August at the age of 90.
