Thomas D. Kilton,German languages specialist at the Modem Languages and Lin- guistics Library of the Univer- sity of Illinois, Urbana- Champaign (UIUC), is participating in an ALA/ United States Information Service project to assist librar- ies in the former German Democratic Republic. During his six-week visit from April to June, Kilton will be visit- ing with librarians and conducting workshops in Greifswald, Rostock, Neubrandenburg, Halle, and Dresden. His trip is also being cosponsored by the UIUC Library’s C. Walter and Gerda B. Mortenson Center for International Library Programs.

Linda K. Bartley,CONSER Program coordi- nator at the Library of Congress (LC), has re- ceived the annual Bowker/Ulrich’s Serials Librarianship Award for 1992 for her outstand- ing achievements and accomplishments in the field of serials li- brarianship. For her first five years at LC, Bartley was head of the Na- tional Serials Data Pro- gram, the U.S. center for the ISSN. For the past ten years, she has coor- dinated the policy and operational aspects of the Cooperative Online Serials (CONSER) Program. Among the achievements for which Bartley was honored are her promotion nationally of the ISSN, the launching of a project to enter abstracting and indexing coverage in CONSER records, the development of the CONSER Editing Guide, and her leadership role in helping focus attention on significant serials management issues such as those under the label “multiple versions.”

John David Marshallreceived the 1992 Tennessee Library Association (TLA) Honor Award for “his significant contribution to the improvement of library service in Tennessee” at the TLA annual conference in Chattanooga. Marshall is university bibliographer/professor at the Todd Library, Middle Tennessee State University in Mur- freesboro.

Carolyn T. Wilsonre- ceived the 1992 Frances Neel Cheney Award for “outstanding contributions to the world of books and librarianship” from the Tennessee Library Associa- tion at its annual confer- ence in Chattanooga. Wil- son is collection development librarian at David Lipscomb Univer- sity in Nashville.

William A. Moffett,director of the Hunting- ton Library in San Marino, California, and past- president of ACRL, has been named honorary doctor of laws by Davidson College, Davidson, North Caro- lina. A 1954 graduate of Davidson, Moffett was awarded the honor “be- cause you have lived and espoused well the life of a scholar and teacher, and because you have assumed the mantle of leadership among those librarians who serve the scholar and teacher, and because you have remained firm in our constitutionally guaranteed right for a free people to have free access to information.” Moffett received the award in April.

David F. Bishop,university librarian at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, since 1987, has been named university librarian at Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois, ef- fective July 1, 1992. Bishop previously served as director of libraries at the University of Geor- gia, Athens, for eight years; as assistant direc- tor for technical services at the University of Chi- cago for five years; and as head of systems and programming at the University of Maryland from 1970-73. Active in ALA,the Center for Re- search Libraries, and the Association of Research Libraries, Bishop has also served on numerous ACRL committees and task forces and has been a member of the EDU- COM board of trustees since 1988. He received his bachelor’s degree from the Eastman School of Music at the University of Rochester in 1959, his MLS from Catholic University of America in 1964, and has done graduate work in mathematics and computer science at the University of Maryland.

Robert Clarkehas been appointed director of libraries for the city of Hialeah, Florida. Clarke received his MLS and Ph.D. in library service from Rutgers University. He has held posi- tions as analyst and deputy chief of techni- cal services at the Na- tional Library of Medi- cine; founding chief of library services at the Special Information Center of the National Clearinghouse for Smoking and Health- pioneering; special assistant to the director for biomedical communications at the Bureau of Drugs, U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA); and director of both the Mental Health Study Center Library and the Foods Library at the FDA. He also served at the National Institutes of Health Library assisting Nobel laureates and fellow researchers with information needs.

James Fox,social studies librarian at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale (SIUC), has been appointed director for reference services and collection management there. Fox joined the staff at SIUC in 1975 as assistant social studies librarian and became head of the division in 1980. He has served for seven years as a mem- ber of the faculty sen- ate. After undergradu- ate work at Florida State University and four years in Naval Intelli- gence, Fox received a master’s in political sci- ence from the Univer- sity of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNO in 1974, and an MLS from UNC in 1975.

Retirements

John Beveragewill retire on July 31, 1992, after 12 years of service at Turpin Library, Dallas Theological Seminary. As public services librarian Beverage managed the move into a new library building and guided the transition to an automated circulation system. Prior to his library service, he was director of admissions for the seminary from 1972 to 1980, and a missionary to Guatemala from 1954 to 1972.

D. Hugh Chisholm,librarian for bibliographer assistance at the University of Texas at Austin General Libraries, retired in March after almost 40 years of service.

Peggy Miller,head of technical services at Ohio Dominican College, Columbus, will retire in July 1992.

Phyllis J. Schoonoverhas recently retired from Butler University, Indianapolis, where she served as music and fine arts librarian since 1974.

Deaths

Evelyn Butler,chief librarian of the Smalley Library at the University of Pennsylvania School of Social Work from 1946 to 1986, died at her home at Stapeley in Germantown, Philadelphia, on January 25,1992. Butler also served as head librarian at the University of Michigan Institute of Public and Social Administration from 1938- 42, and head librarian at the Business and Technology Department Library of New Britain Institute in Connecticut from 1942-46. A long-time meber of ALA, she served on the Middle Atlantic Recruiting Committee and the Ad Hoc Committee on Urban Universities, and was a member of the Delaware chapter of ACRL. Butler also served the Special Libraries Association in many capacities and was a member of the Social Welfare Librarians Group of the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). She was co-compiler of a landmark guide published by CSWE in 1962, Building a Social Work Library).

Butler served as a social work library consultant to many libraries including Howard University in 1962, Hunter College in in 1965, Syracuse University in 1967-68, Kings College, London, in 1971, and the U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare in 1971-72. She earned her degrees of A.B., A.B.L.S., and A.M.L.S. from the University of Michigan.

Wilbur Jordan Smith,former head of the Department of Special Collections in the university library at UCLA, died on March 13 after an extended illness. Smith joined the UCLA library in 1947 and became head of special collections in 1951; he held the position for 20 years. He graduated from Pomona College, the University of Virginia, and Columbia University, and received a library certificate in the last graduating class of the Los Angeles Public Library School in 1932. In the 1930s he worked in bookstores, as a reporter, and in the Research Department at MGM. In 1947 he was appointed gifts and exchange librarian at UCLA, then was promoted to rare books librarian. As head of special collections, Smith’s greatest achievement was in the development of the children’s book collection referred to recently as “one of the great collections of English-language children’s books.” In Smith’s honor, the UCLA library has established the Wilbur Jordan Smith Memorial Fund for the Children’s Book Collection.

Donald Thompson,retired head librarian of Wabash College, Crawfordsville, Indiana, died February 18, 1992, at the age of 78. Thompson received a bachelor’s degree from Iowa State University, a BSLS from the University of Illinois, and a master’s degree in economics from Temple University. Before becoming head librarian at Wabash in 1955, he worked at Temple University, the University of Alabama, and Mississippi State University. An active member of ALA, Thompson served as ALA Councilor and chair of the College Section. On the state level he served as president of the Mississippi and Indiana Library Associations. A prolific author who frequently contributed to professional journals, Thompson wrote two volumes of Indiana Authors and Their Works and was a regular columnist on local history for the Montgomery County Magazine. ■
