In the News

By all accounts ACRL’s Sixth National Conference was a success; the participants gave it the highest evaluation ever received by an ACRL National Conference. The beautiful spring weather in Salt Lake City provided a glorious backdrop to a stimulating array of speakers and ideas.

Julian Bond opened the conference with a moving review of civil rights in the U.S., reminding us of what it is to be a have-not. Paul Saffo gave us a look at the phenomena of overnight success—technologically speaking it takes about 20 years to achieve overnight success— and predicted that libraries will be everywhere but nowhere; they will be less of a place and more of a space. Catharine Stimpson reviewed the role of women’s studies in higher education and W. David Penniman challenged us to find new ways to measure the effectiveness and success of library services.

The many papers and programs offered practical ideas for managing day-to-day library operations and providing library services. C&RL News’ call for reporters was so successful and the reports so interesting that this issue contains the first of two articles reporting on the conference. The second article will appear in the July/August issue. I want to extend my thanks to the many volunteer reporters who took on the difficult job of providing succinct (and interesting) summaries of programs—and made a quick deadline! I hope you find their reports as interesting as I did. My apologies to those whose reports I was unable to use due to space limitations.

This issue also includes reports on other conferences: the Coalition for Networked Information (page 399), New Information Technology (page 374), Earlham/Eckerd College BI (page 402), and the Très Grande Bibliothèque (page 394).

Sharon Vaughters, a career guidance counselor at the University of Michigan, makes practical suggestions you can implement to encourage individuals to consider a career in librarianship.
