Pam Spiegel

Jean L. Hirons,acting CONSER coordinator of the Library of Congress, is the winner of the 1996 annual Bowker/Ulrich Serials Li- brarianship Award. She is being recognized for her unflagging commitment to quality and cooperation in serials cataloging through her significant contributions to the CONSER Cataloging Manual, which she created. The manual took three years to prepare and presents the policies and practices for serials cataloging in a logical arrangement.

Ernest B. Ingles,chief librarian and executive director of learning systems at the University of Alberta, was awarded the Marie Tremaine Medal for excellence in Canadian bibliography by the Bibliographic Society of Canada. Ingles was founding director of the Canadian Institute for Historical Microreproductions, and as such laid the groundwork for and superintended the task of transferring Canada’s printed heritage to microfiche. Ingles is also the author of more than 20 publications, among them are three major works: Canada: The Printed Record: A Bibliographic Register with Indexes (4th ed., 1984), Canada (World Bibliographic Series #62, 1990), and Bibliography of Canadian Bibliographies (3rd ed., 1994).

Marilyn Myers,head of collection development and bibliographic services at Arizona State University West, was honored as the fifth recipient of the Holway R. Jones Award for Distinguished Service by the Council of Planning Librarians (CPL). During her membership in CPL, Myers has served as president, as a member of the Editorial Advisory Board of the CPL Bibliography Series, and as a member of CPL Nominating Committees. She is currently the listserv administrator for CPLFYI-L, and chair of the Strategic Planning Committee.

Mary Reichel,university librarian at Appalachian State University in North Carolina, is the newly elected chair of the SOLINET (Southeastern Library Network) Board of Directors. Reichel served on the ALA Council from 1990 to 1994 and currently serves on the ACRL Board of Directors. Other new SOLINET offic- ers are: vice-chair: Jean Major, university librarian at Old Dominion University; secretary: Karen McDaniel, director of libraries at Ken- tucky State University; and treasurer: Sandra M. Coo- per, state librarian of North Carolina. Also, Jennifer Cargill and Paul A. Willis were elected to three-year terms on the SOLINET Board of Directors. Cargilll is dean of libraries at Loui- siana State University; Willis is director of li- braries at the University of Kentucky. Finally, two new delegates have been elected to serve three-year terms on the SOLINET delegation to the OCLC Users Council. They are: Larry P. Alford, senior associate university librarian at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and Birdie O. Weir, director of libraries at Ala- bama A&M University.

John V. Richardson

John V. Richardson Jr.,associate professor in the Department of Library and Information Science in the Graduate School of Education and Information Studies at UCLA, will be a visiting distinguished scholar at the Research and Special Projects Office of the OCLC Online Computer Library Center in Dublin, Ohio, during his 1996-97 academic year sabbati- cal. Richardson will work on aspects of general reference work, notably the architectural logic of question-answering and knowledge-based or expert system front ends that could be made available on the World Wide Web.

Appointments

D. Russell Baileyhas been named library director at Green Mountain College in Poultney, Vermont. Bailey was formerly with Eckerd Col- lege in St. Petersburg, Florida, where he served as a faculty member and instructional services librarian. A graduate of Florida Presbyterian (Eckerd) College, Bailey received master’s de- grees from the University of Kentucky and the University of South Florida, and master’s and doc- toral degrees from Louisiana State University.

Nancy M. Cline

Nancy M. Cline,dean of University Libraries at Penn State since 1988, has been named Roy

E. Larsen librarian of Har- vard College. Cline be- gan her career at Penn State in 1970 as a docu- ments librarian, then was named head of the Gov- ernment Documents Sec- tion in 1971, a position she held until 1980 when she was named chief of the Bibliographic Re- sources Department. In 1984 she became assistant dean and head of Bibliographic Resources and Services until 1988. Currently president of ARL, Cline is also a member of ALA, EDUCOM, and RLG, and serves on the RLG Board of Di- rectors and has chaired its Finance and Admin- istration Committee. She also serves on the Board of Directors of the Association of Ameri- can Colleges and Universities.

Ronald F. Dow

Ronald F. Dow,associate dean of university libraries at Penn State University, has been appointed dean of River Campus libraries at the University of Rochester (UR). Dow has served as associate dean at Penn State since 1993, and was assistant dean there from 1990 to 1993. Before that he served as director of libraries for Shearson Lehman Brothers in New York. UR provost Charles E. Phelps said, “Ron Dow brings to the university a combination of out- standing experience and a level of enthusiasm for his work that are unmatched.”

Mark L. Daganaarhas been appointed director of Eilender Memorial Library at Nicholls State University in Thibodaux, Louisiana. Daganaar has served as acting director and associate di- rector since 1994. Before that he served as di- rector of library services at Three Rivers Com- munity College in Poplar Bluff, Missouri. A graduate of Midland College, Daganaar received his MLS from the University of Missouri.

Frances Groen

Frances Groenhas been appointed director of libraries at McGill University in Montreal. Green has been at McGill since 1974, serving as life sciences area librarian, associate director for public services and col- lections, and deputy di- rector of libraries. She has also held positions at Stanford University’s Lane Medical Library and the University of Pitts- burgh. She is active in IFLA and is a past-president of the Medical Library Association. In 1996 she received the Canadian Association of Col- lege and University Libraries Outstanding Aca- demic Librarian Award.

Suzanne Thorin

Suzanne Thorin,associate librarian at the Li- brary of Congress, has been appointed dean of the Indiana University Libraries, Bloomington. Thorin served in many capacities at LC during her 16 years there, in- cluding chief of staff, act- ing director of the Library of Congress Public Ser- vice and Collection Man- agement, chief of the General Reading Rooms Division, assistant chief of that division, head of Research Facilities, and head of the Music Sec- tion in National Library Services for the Blind and Physically Handicapped. She also served as the official U.S. representative, appointed by the White House, for the G-7 Electronic Librar- ies Project. She was responsible for the Na- tional Digital Library Program; for THOMAS, a legislative information system; and for GLIN, a global law information network.

Karin Trainer,associate university librarian at Yale University since 1983, has been appointed university librarian at Princeton UniOctober 1996/ 609 versity. Trainer began her career as a descrip- tive cataloger at Princeton in 1972. She then served as catalog maintenance librarian from 1974 to 1978, then became director of techni- cal and automated services at New York Uni- versity. An early proponent of online catalogs for academic libraries, Trainer has worked with RLG on a number of electronic applications for scholarship and served for six years as review editor for Information Technology and Librar- ies. A graduate of Rutgers University, Trainer received her MLS from Drexel University and her master’s in liberal arts from New York Uni- versity.

Philip M. Turner

Philip M. Turnerhas been named dean of the School of Library and Information Sciences at the University of North Texas (UNT) in Denton. Since 1988 Turner had served as dean of the School of Library and Information Studies at the University of Ala- bama, where he had also served since 1991 as as- sistant vice-chancellor for academic affairs. In addition to his role as dean at UNT, Turner will serve as associate vice-president of academic affairs for distance education, and he will chair the university’s Information Resource Council. The author of many books and articles, Turner was only the second academic ever to win the Annual Award for Achievement in Managing Information Technology given by Carnegie Mellon University and American Management Systems.

Nicole Aueris now coordinator for client educational programs at Virginia Tech University Libraries.

Marcia Bianchihas been appointed catalog librarian at Reed College in Portland, Oregon.

Mikel Breitensteinhas joined Long Island University’s Palmer School of Library and In formation Science as undergraduate program director.

Lisa Browaris now head of the Lilly Library at Indiana University, Bloomington.

Catherine Candeeis the new physics librarian at Stanford University.

Tom Frenchhas been appointed reference and access services librarian at Linfield College in McMinnville, Oregon.

Christof Galliis the new librarian for the Haas School’s Evening MBA Program at the University of California, Berkeley.

Laura Galván-Estradais now physical sciences librarian at California State University, Long Beach.

Peter Hanffhas been named deputy director of the Bancroft Library at the University of California, Berkeley.

Eloise R. Hitchcockhas been appointed head of reference at the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee.

Charlene Loopehas been appointed reference librarian at the University of South Carolina’s Thomas Cooper Library.

Kristin McDonoughhas been named director of the New York Public Library’s new Science, Industry, and Business Library.

AnnMarie Mitchellis now librarian for Italian collections at the University of California, Berkeley.

Diane Perushekis now assistant university librarian for collection management at Northwestern University.

Patricia A. Phillipshas been appointed associate university librarian for technical services at the University of Texas at El Paso.

Dorman H. Smithhas been appointed associate university librarian of University Libraries at the University of Cincinnati.

Kristin Standaertis now halftime government publications librarian at Northwestern University.

Retirements

Melvin R. George

Melvin R. George,who has served as the Delpha and Donald Campbell university librarian at Oregon State University (OSU) since 1984, will retire at the end of this year. George has over- seen the construction of the Marilyn Potts Guin Library at OSU’s Hatfield Marine Science Center, the introduction of a wide variety of automated ser- vices, and the $40 million fundraising effort to con- struct the new Valley Library located on OSU’s main campus.

Barbara Jones,reference librarian/bibliographer at the University of Kansas (KU), recently retired. Jones joined KU in 1960 as an assistant reference librarian. She has also served as as sistant head of reference, acting head of reference, and as supervisor of interlibrary services.

Joseph P. Shubertretired in July after serving as assistant commissioner for libraries in the New York State Education Department since 1977. He has been named state librarian emeritus by the New York State Board of Regents. Shubert began his professional career as reference and documents librarian at the Nevada State Library. He has also served as state librarian of Ohio and Nevada, and as assistant director of the ALA International Relations Office. He was appointed by President Ford to the Advisory Committee for the 1979 White House Conference on Library and Information Services and served on a planning group for the 1991 conference. He has received distinguished alumnus awards from the University of Denver (1979) and SUNY College at Geneseo (1985), and received the Distinguished Public Service Award and medal from the Nelson A. Rockefeller College of Public Affairs at the University at Albany (1987).

Deaths

Henry G. Gilbert,a reference librarian at the National Agricultural Library (NAL) since 1969, died last April after recovering from a bone marrow replacement operation he had in 1995 to fight against non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. He was 66. At NAL Gilbert served for several years as librarian for the U.S. National Arboretum, and was until recently the curator of the library’s Nursery and Seed Trade Catalogs Collection. Before joining NAL, Gilbert held positions with various agricultural organizations including experiment stations and garden centers, and was a plant quarantine inspector for the USDA at the Port of New York.

Wallace R. Nethery,retired librarian of the Hoose Library of Philosophy at the University of Southern California (USC), died at home last February. Nethery served as librarian of the Hoose Library from 1956 to 1976. From 1964 to 1976 he also served as editor of CORANTO, the journal of the Friends of the USC Libraries. An authority on Charles Lamb, Nethery was the author of several books and a contributor to many scholarly publications.

Louise Jones Giles,46, outstanding in the field of community college learn- ing resource centers, a leader in the American Library Association and past-president of the Association of College and Research Libraries, died on December 31, 1976. Detroit firemen responding to a fire in her home discovered the bodies of Louise and her husband of 23 years [Edwin C. Giles] at about 6:30 a.m.

Mrs. Giles was born in Aragon, Georgia, on April 20, 1930. She received her B.A. in foreign languages from the University of Akron in 1952 and her M.S. in library science from Drexel Institute of Technology in 1953 (Alice B. Kroeger Scholarship recipient). In 1953 she received the Buenos Aires Convention Fellowship to spend one year as an exchange student in Tegucigalpa, Honduras. She had completed course work for her doctorate from the Center for the Study of Higher Education at the University of Michigan.

At the time of her death, Mrs. Giles was dean of learning resources at Macomb County Community College, Warren, Michigan, a position she had held since March 1970. Although her contributions were most instrumental in the growth and influence of learning resources, her influence and insight will be sorely missed throughout the college. Prior work experiences were positions as associate dean of learning resources at Oakland Community College, first at Highland Lakes Campus, Union Lake, Michigan, and then at Orchard Ridge Campus, Farmington, Michigan, in 1965–70, and head of the foreign language collection and first assistant, young adult and adult librarian at Detroit Public Library in 1953–65.

Mrs. Giles was active in the American Library Association (past president of ACRL, past chairman of the Community and Junior College Libraries Section, member of many ALA committees), Michigan Library Association, Association for Educational Communications and Technology, Michigan Association of Administrators of Learning Resources, National Society for Programmed Instruction, Michigan Association of Community College Instructional Administrators, and Michigan Academy of Science, Arts and Letters. She had served on accreditation teams for both the North Central Association and the Middle States Association

Commission of Higher Education and had just completed an accredi- tation visit for the Middle States Associa- tion at the Caribbean Junior College, Puerto Rico, in November.

Louise Jones Giles

Mrs. Giles had been appointed a member of the Library Advisory Committee which was established by Dr.

Daniel J. Boorstin, Librarian of Congress, to review the LC operation with an eye toward reorganization.

She was a recipient of the John S. Brubacher Award from the Center for the Study of Higher Education at the University of Michigan in 1975 for her outstanding graduate essay on the history and philosophy of higher education.

Her publications included: Aspects of the Junior College Field, A Bibliography (AACJC, 1969); “Planning Community College Resource Centers,” American Libraries (January 1971); “Focus on Community College Libraries,” Michigan Librarian (Summer 1971); “The Black Librarian As Change Agent” in What Black Librarians Are Saying, edited by E. J. Josey (Scarecrow Press, 1972); “On the Cutting Edge of Change” in New Dimensions in Academic Library Service, edited by E. J. Josey (Scarecrow Press, 1973).

Edwin C. Giles attended Kent State University. He was graduated from Wayne State University, Detroit, Michigan, with a master of arts degree in administration. He taught in the school system of Detroit and for the past few years he was principal of the Scripps Elementary School.

Mr. and Mrs. Giles are survived by their daughter, Susan, 19, who is a student at City University of New York.
