IPI publishes guide for storing film
The Image Permanence In- stitute (IPI) at the Rochester Institute of Technology in New York has published Storage Guide for Acetate Film. Based on five years of IPI research into the deterio- ration of acetate film, it is in- tended to enable staff of museums, archives, and li- braries to understand the ways in which temperature and relative humidity in storage environments relate to the chemical de- generation of photographic film, cinema film, and microfilm. It will also assist in predicting the effects of actual storage conditions on the life expectancy of film collections. The four- part guide consists of a 24-page booklet, a double-sided time/temperature/RH wheel, time contour graphs and a “time out of storage” table.
Copies may be purchased for $25, plus $2 shipping and handling, from the Rochester Institute of Technology, Image Permanence Institute, 70 Lomb Memorial Drive, Rochester, NY 14623-5604.
ASTM developing adhesives standard
Subcommittee D14.07 of the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) is developing several standards for adhesives used in libraries and archives, beginning with a standard for pressure-sensitive adhesives. This should facilitate evaluation and selection of many types of supplies, e.g., barcodes, call number labels, slide labels, etc. Their next meeting will be held during the ASTM’s semi-annual meeting, on October 11, 1993, at 10:00 a.m. in the Hyatt Regency Hotel at the Dallas/Ft. Worth Airport.

ALA discussion group focuses on preservation education for children
The Preservation Education and Outreach Discussion Group of ALA/ALCTS’ Preservation of Library Materials Section (PLMS) discussed preservation education for children in public schools or school libraries at its meeting on June 28, 1993, in New Orleans. Attendees endorsed the instruction done in St. Louis schools by Cheryl Holland of Washing- ton University and consid- ered ways to encourage similar work nationwide. According to Sharlane Grant of Arizona State University, librarians should be con- cerned with preservation education for children and young adults, since early training in proper care of library materials might pre- vent future damage to academic library collections.

Preservation Management Seminar
The second Preservation Management Seminar, co-sponsored by the College Libraries Committee of the Commission on Preservation and Access and the Southeastern Library Network (SOLINET), was held from July 22 through 30, 1993, at Wellesley College and proved to be an overwhelming success. Twenty-one participants and five faculty worked for eight days developing the knowledge base and management skills required to build balanced preservation programs. This program clearly demonstrated the effectiveness of a residence seminar format for training and facilitating communication among part-time preservation administrators.
The Commission and SOLINET have decided to open sponsorship of future seminars to other organizations. For more information about sponsorship or participation, contact Lisa Fox, 840 Rosedale Avenue, Atlanta, GA 30312-3626; (404) 627-2855; lfox@mail.solinet.net. ■
