DavidR. Dowell has been named director of information and library resources at the Illinois Institute of Technology’s James S. Kemper Library, Chicago. His appointment was effective August 17. Dowell was most recently assistant university librarian for administrative services at Duke University in 1979-81. Prior to that he held the position of assistant university librarian for personnel and staff development at Duke (1975-79) and head of administrative services at Iowa State University (1972-75).

David R. Dowell

Dowell recently completed most of the requirements for a Ph.D. in librarianship at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and he has begun work on a dissertation on the “relationship of sex to salaries of librarians in ARL libraries.” His two master’s degrees are in history and library science from the University of Illinois.

Dowell has been active in ALA and divisional committees. Currently he is vice-chair/chair-elect of the LAMA Personnel Administration Section, and in 1979-81 he was a member-at-large on LAMA’s Executive Committee. Dowell has also chaired ALA’s Professional Ethics Committee (1977-78).

He has had articles published in North Carolina Libraries, Colorado Libraries, Library Journal, and American Libraries, as well as a chapter on the “Role of the Supervisor in Training and Developing Staff,” in Supervision of Employees in Libraries, published by the University of Illinois Graduate School of Library and Information Science, 1979.

RETIREMENTS

Yasuko Fukano,head of the Fisheries-Oceanography Library, University of Washington, Seattle, retired on February 2 after 15 years of service.

Jack L. Gotlobehas retired from the position of associate director for public services at Temple University, Philadelphia, which he has held since 1970. He was formerly director of the library at the Community College of Philadelphia.

Theodosia Kichorowsky,processing librarian in the Processing Section, Rare Book and Special Collections Division of the Library of Congress, retired on November 30 after more than 18 years of federal service.

Judy Morton,librarian of the Engineering Library at the University of California, Berkeley, retired on December 11.

Margaret Studhalter,monographic original cataloger at the University of California, Berkeley, retired on January 1 after nearly 35 years of service.

DEATHS

Luther H. Evans,Librarian of Congress from 1945 to 1953, died on December 23 in San Antonio, where he has lived since 1977. Following his service at LC, Evans was director-general of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) from 1953 to 1958. In 1962 he was named director of international and legal collections for the library at Columbia University. He later became chairman of the Association for the World University.

Evans’ first position at the Library of Congress in 1939 was as director of the Legislative Reference (now Congressional Research) Service. This followed several years of teaching at Stanford, Princeton, and Dartmouth and service as director of the Historical Records Survey, which resulted in the publication of many guides and other historical materials in the 1930s.

Evans earned a master’s degree in economics from the University of Texas. He was awarded a doctorate by Stanford University and wrote his dissertation on “The Mandates System and the Administration of Territories under C Mandate,’’ a reflection of his early interest in international affairs.

Marian B. Myerswho retired in 1962 as head of the Book Section in the Copyright Cataloging Division of the Library of Congress, died on October 1 in Bethesda. ■■
