PROFILE

David E. Pownallhas been appointed director of Library Services and promoted to the courtesy rank of professor at Hofstra University, Hempstead, New York, effective September 1973. Mr. Pownall served during 1972-1973 as acting director of Library Services. Previous to that he was associate director of Library Services, beginning in 1969. Before coming to Hofstra he was head humanities librarian at Simon Fraser University, Burnaby, British Columbia from 1967-1969. He also served as head of Reader Services at the University of Northern Iowa library from 1964-1967. From 1958 to 1964 he was employed in a variety of capacities at Oregon State University library, Corvallis, Oregon.

Mr. Pownall is well known as a bibliographer. This year the first three volumes of his seven volume bibliography, Articles on Twen→ tieth Century Literature, have been published. His particular areas of expertise are in library organization and management, personnel management, and collection building. He is active in the American Library Association, presently serving on the LAD Committee on Insurance for Libraries and the ACRL Urban Universities Library Committee.

RETIREMENTS

Mrs. Grace J. Berminghamretired on June 30 as social work librarian after twenty-seven years with the Columbia University libraries.

Professor Benjamin Chubak,head of the City College, New York, Library’s Acquisitions Division since 1945, is now on retirement leave, after thirty-eight years of service.

Miss Margaret Cressaty,exchange librarian, and Miss Elizabeth Karshner, head of Special Collections, retired recently from the library of the University of California, Irvine.

Dorothy E. Fuller,science librarian, Kohler Science Library, Beloit College, retired August 31, 1973 after eighteen years of continuous service to the Beloit College libraries.

Mrs. Esther Eytcheson Muellerhas retired from her position as head of Technical Processes at the Linda Hall Library, Kansas City, Missouri. Mrs. Mueller has held that position from the date of the library’s founding in 1946.

July 31 marked the retirement of Eva Olson after twenty-seven years in the University of California Berkeley General Library system. For the past twenty years she has been head of the Biology Library.

Mrs. Meira G. Pimsleurretired on June 30 as head of Law Acquisitions at the Columbia University libraries.
