Profiles

Joseph W. Constance, Jr., has been named director of the Geisel Library at Saint Anselm College in Manchester, New Hampshire. Prior to his appointment, Constance served as head of the Archives and Manuscripts Department at Boston College and as university archivist and curator of rare books at Georgia State University in Atlanta.

At Boston College he founded the Congressional Archives program through which the legislative papers of Boston College graduates were both acquired and made available for research.

Constance is a member of the ALA and has also been active in the Society of American Archivists, Society of Georgia Archivists, and the New England Archivists. He recently served as editor-inchief of the New England Archivist Newsletter and as chair and commentator of a session entitled Closing a Senatorial Office at the 1989 Society of American Archivist annual meeting. For the last eight years he has been a book reviewer for Library Journal, Provenance, and Georgia Libraries. Constance is a graduate of Saint Michael’s College and holds a master’s degree in history from the University of Vermont and an MLS from the State University of New York at Albany. He assumed his duties on August 1.

Blaise Cronin of Glasgow, Scotland, has been named dean of the School of Library and Information Science of Indiana University, Bloomington, effective summer 1991. Cronin has been professor and head of the Department of Information Science at the University of Strathclyde since 1985. Prior to this appointment he was principal research officer of the Association for Information Management in London, England, for five years. Cronin has also served as a librarian in the London Borough of Brent, and in the Westminster City Libraries.

Cronin holds a master’s degree in philosophy, French, and German from Trinity College, Dublin; two diplomas (in education and librarianship) from the Queen’s University of Belfast; and an MLS and Ph.D. in information science, also from the Queen’s University. Among other honors, he has been awarded the Fellowship of the Library Association of the United Kingdom. Cronin has published extensively in the fields of information management and education for librarianship and information science. He has consulted extensively, both in the United Kingdom and overseas. He has been active in advising for educational programs in library and information science overseas.

Arnold Hirshon

Arnold Hirshon has been appointed the director of the University Library at Wright State University, Dayton, Ohio, effective September 1. Hirshon has served as associate director at Virginia Commonwealth University since 1983 and held progressively responsible positions at Duke University from 1978 to 1983 and Wayne State University from 1974 to 1978. He holds a master’s degree in public administration from Wayne State University (1978), an MLS from Indiana University (1974), and a bachelor’s degree in English from the State University of New York (1972).

Hirshon has been very active in ALA, ACRL, and the Association for Library Collections and Access Services (ALCTS). He has been a member of both the ACRL Academic Status Committee and the Legislation Committee. Recently elected as the vice-president/president of ALCTS, Hirshon also served in many capacities in that division, including chair of its Budget and Finance Committee, editor of the RTSD Newsletter from 1979 to 1985, and member-at-large on the Resources Section’s Executive Committee. For the Online Computer Library Center, Hirshon served as a representative on the OCLC Users Council. He was a member of the National Information Standards Organization Subcommittee W, which was responsible for the recently published standard on holdings statements for non-serial publications.

Among his numerous publications are two SPEC Kits on automated library systems, book chapters on organizational design and on library automation, a forthcoming book on competitively procuring book and journal vendor services, and many articles concerning microcomputers, cataloging, and U.S. presidential papers. Hirshon has given many national presentations on the application of technology in libraries, technical services management, collection management, and personnel issues. He also recently served as a library consultant for Washington International University in Virginia.

Bonita Perry

Bonita Perry has been named assistant director of the Research Services Division at the Smithsonian Institution Libraries, effective September 4. The Research Services Division is comprised of 14 branch libraries which provide service to the general public and the Smithsonian Institution’s museum and research staff. Perry joins the Smithsonian after 9 years of service as associate director for reader services in the Milton S. Eisenhower at Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore. Perry began her 11-year career at Johns Hopkins in 1979 with an appointment as the audiovisual/reference librarian. In 1980 she served as the head of reference services, and in 1981 became the associate director for reader services. As associate director, Perry’s accomplishments included the creation of a microcomputer laboratory, the selection and implementation of NOTIS, overseeing the successful move of the Government Publications/Maps/Law Department, and helping to create the Resource Services Department.

Prior to working at Johns Hopkins, Perry served as a researcher at the National Security Agency and as a librarian at Morgan State University and at Indiana University. She also has been director of the library and chairman of the Library Science Department at Alvemo College, in Milwaukee. In 1986 she served as program chair for the ACRL national conference in Baltimore. She was a delegate to the Maryland Governor’s Conference on Information Services held in Baltimore. She received her bachelor’s degree in English from Spelman College and her MLS in from Atlanta University where she was awarded a Ford Foundation Fellowship.

Marion T. Reid

Marion T. Reid has been appointed director of library services for the California State University, San Marcos, effective August 1. Reid has served as interim library director since founding faculty and other administrators joined that institution in September 1989. As library director she is responsible for planning facilities and collections, hiring the staff, and developing the library and information resources services for the 20th campus of the California State University. Prior to joining CSU, San Marcos, Reid served on the staff of the Louisiana State University Libraries for 21 years. Her positions there included head of the Order Department from 1969 through 1977 and associate director for technical services from 1984 until her departure. Reid received her bachelor’s degree and MS in LS from the University of Illinois. Her early positions include serving as an elementary school librarian for the Urbana Community Schools and as assistant supervisory scientist for the Illinois State Natural History Survey. Reid served as president of the ALA’s Resources and Technical Services Division in 1988 and as a board member of the Southeastern Library Network, Inc. She currently chairs the ACRL Appointments and Nominations Committee.

Donald E. Riggs, dean of university libraries at Arizona State University, has been named dean of the University of Michigan Library, Ann Arbor, effective January 1, 1991. Riggs will succeed Robert M. Warner, who has held the joint appointment of University of Michigan Library interim director and dean of the School of Information and

Library Studies since May 1988. Riggs also will hold an appointment as professor of information and library studies.

Riggs has been dean at Arizona State since 1979. Riggs’ accomplishments at Arizona State include creating an affirmative action program; increasing the acquisitions budget from $1.7 million in 1979 to $6 million; implementing a collection development program and an online public access catalog.

Riggs holds a bachelor’s degree in biological science from Glenville State College, a master’s degree in educational administration and liberal arts from West Virginia University, an MLS from the University of Pittsburgh, and an Ed.D. in higher education administration and community education from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. Prior to joining Arizona State, Riggs was director of libraries and on the faculty at the University of Colorado; director of the Central Colorado Multitype Library System; director of libraries and media services for Bluefield State College, Concord College, Greenbrier Community College, and the southern campus of West Virginia College of Graduate Studies; and director of the library and learning center and associate professor at Bluefield State College. He also held librarian positions at California University of Pennsylvania and high schools in Wheeling, West Virginia.

His professional affiliations include serving on the Board of Directors and executive committee and as councilor for ALA’s Library and Information Technology Association; as a delegate to the Online Computing Library Center (OCLC) Users Council and a member of OCLC’s Board of Directors; on the Budget and Finance Committee of the Center for Research Libraries; as a member of the Sixth ACRL National Conference Committee; and on the Research Library Resources Management Committee of the Association of Research Libraries. He also has headed state library associations in Arizona, Colorado, and West Virginia. Riggs is the author of eight books, including Communication: The Language of Library Leadership, forthcoming this year; Creativity, Entrepreneurship and Innovation in Libraries; and The Effective Library Leader/Manager, also due out this year. Riggs is founding editor of the quarterly Library Administration and Management, published by the ALA’s Library Administration and Management Association. He also serves on the editorial boards of College and Research Libraries and the Journal of Library Administration.

Brooke E. Sheldon, dean of library and information studies at Texas Woman’s University, has been appointed dean of the Graduate School of Library and Information Science at the University of Texas at Austin, effective January 1,1991. Sheldon replaces Ronald E. Wyllys, who retired from the UT Austin deanship to return to full-time teaching and research. The new dean’s specialties in the areas of teaching and research include public and state library development, networks, planning and evaluation, communications, management and leadership, and continuing education.

Sheldon began her current position at Texas Woman’s University in 1977. From July 1979 to December 1980 she served as provost of the university general divisions. In 1983-1984, she served as president of the American Library Association. She obtained a bachelor’s degree in English and economics in 1952 from Acadia University in Nova Scotia, an MLS in 1954 from Simmons College in Boston, and a Ph.D. in library science in 1977 from the University of Pittsburgh. In 1985 she received a doctor of civil laws degree from Acadia University. Sheldon has a number of published monographs and articles and has lectured and consulted widely.

Beth J. Shapiro

Beth J. Shapiro has been named university librarian at Rice University, Houston. Shapiro replaces Sam Carrington, who returns to Rice’s

French Department to assume teaching duties after more than 11 years as university librarian.

Shapiro comes to Rice from Michigan State University Libraries where she served as deputy director. She has also held positions there as associate director for readers services, head of social sciences collection development, and urban policy and planning librarian.

She earned her bachelor’s, master’s degree, and doctoral degrees in sociology from Michigan State University, as well as an MLS from Western Michigan University. At Rice, Shapiro will oversee the operation of Rice’s Fondren Library and its staff of more than 100.

Peggy Sullivan, a former Chicago Public Library official and past president of the American Library Association, has been named interim director of university libraries at Northern Illinois University, De Kalb. Now dean of NIU’s College of Professional Studies and a professor of library and information studies, Sullivan’s appointment as interim director is for two years. She succeeds Steven R. Marquardt, who recently left NIU to return to a similar post at the University of Wisconsin, Eau Claire.

Peggy Sullivan

In 1980-1981, Sullivan served as ALA president of the American Library Association. She came to Northern Illinois University in July 1981 as professional studies dean after four years as assistant commissioner for extension services for the Chicago Public Library, a job in which she visited at least 85 Chicago public library branches every six months. Before that, she served as dean of students and as associate professor in the University of Chicago’s Graduate Library School. Her earlier career included posts as children’s librarian, school library specialist, and library educator in eight graduate library education programs.

Sullivan has a bachelor’s degree maxima cum laude in language and literature from Clarke College, Dubuque, Iowa, an MLS from Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C., and both a certificate of advanced study and a doctorate from the University of Chicago’s Graduate Library School. In 1982 she received the Catholic Library Association’s Certificate of Merit for her contributions to the secondary school library field. She coauthored a handbook on public library administration and has published scores of articles in professional journals, two children’s books, and has been a regular reviewer for a number of publications.

Peter G. Watson-Boone has been named director of the Golda Meir Library at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, effective July 1990. Before coming to the University of Wisconsin- Milwaukee, Watson- Boone served as university librarian at Idaho State University, Pocatello. He served at California State University, Chico, from 1976 to 1987, from 1985 to 1987 he held the position of assistant university librarian for programs and services; from 1984 to 1985 he was head of the Access Services Division; and he started at Chico as a reference librarian and data services coordinator. At the University of California, Los Angeles, he served as research librarian; head, Center for Information

Peter G. Watson- Boone

Services; and data services coordinator between the years of 1969 and 1976. He received his bachelor’s degree in English and philosophy from the University of Manchester, England, his master’s degree in English from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and his MLS with distinction from the University of California, Los Angeles.

He is active in the ALA, has served on several of its committees, and has participated actively in conferences as speaker, planner, and moderator. He has published numerous books, including Online Bibliographic Services—Where We Are, Where We’re Going, On-line Catalog: The Inside Story (edited with William E. Post), Computerbased Referencce Service (with M. Lorraine Mathies), and Great Britain’s National Lending Library ; reports; chapters such as “Reference tools in the 21st century” in 12 Years til 2000 (1990) and “Acquiring the Glenn E. Tyler Bequest” in Science and Society (1990); book reviews; and articles on topics within the scope of librarianship.

People in the news

Eugene Engeldinger, former interim library director and head of public services at the McIntyre Library, University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, has been named 1990 Librarian of the Year by the Wisconsin Library Association, WLA. On August 15, 1990, Engeldinger became the director of the Ruthrauff Library, Carthage College, Kenosha, Wisconsin.

Engeldinger made many contributions to reference and public services during his twenty years of service at UW-Eau Claire, including remodeling the reference facilities to provide more efficient service. He was cited by his peers for his strong leadership role in the field of bibliographic instruction. Engeldinger has held various positions in the Wisconsin Association of Academic Librarians, a chapter of ACRL. He initiated and served as first editor of the WAAL Newsletter, and served as a member of the WLA Board of Directors. He has been a guest graduate school lecturer, a speaker at national bibliographic conferences, and is currently editor of the ACRL Bibliographic Instruction Section Newsletter.

Retirements

Rosemary McDonough, reference librarian at the University of Kansas Libraries, Lawrence, since 1980, has announced her retirement, effective December 31, 1990. McDonough’s employment with the University began in October 1969 as an assistant serials cataloger. From December 1970 until September 1980 she was head of the Exchange and Gifts operation. McDonough has also served as a bibliographer for business, film studies, speech and drama, and journalism.

Joan I. Tracy, head serials librarian at Eastern Washington University, Cheney, will retire in December 1990 after 23 years of service. Her professional experience includes an exchange in England as a lecturer in librarianship at Newcastle upon Tyne Polytechnic, and another in Australia as a cataloger at the University of Queensland.
