PROFILES
Joyce N. Davis
JoyceN. Davis has been named assistant director for automated systems and technical services at Oklahoma State University’s Edmon Low Library, Stillwater. She also holds the rank of assistant professor in the OSU Library.
Davis received a bachelor’s degree from William Jewel College, an MLS from the University of North Carolina, and a master’s in divinity from Duke University.
She served from 1981 to 1983 as assistant city librarian in Bridgeport, Connecticut, and from 1977 to 1981 as manager for library systems support services with Cincinnati Electronics Corporation. Other experience includes four years as associate director for technical services with the Stamford (Conn.) Public Library, two years as assistant head of the Catalog Department at the University of Notre Dame, and three years as head cataloger with the Connecticut State Library.
Davis recently served as consultant to OCLC on the development of automated circulation systems and to Cincinnati Electronics where she completed a study of corporations which convert library card catalogs to online systems.
Melvin R. George
MelvinR. George has been appointed director of libraries at Oregon State University, Corvallis, effective April 1. Currently he is university librarian and director of learning services at Northeastern Illinois University, Chicago. Prior to coming to Northeastern in 1974, he was college librarian at Elmhurst College, Illinois.
George received a Ph.D. in education from the University of Chicago in 1979 and his MLS from the University of Minnesota in 1956. He also holds a bachelor’s degree from St. Cloud State University. His Ph.D. dissertation is a comprehensive history of Northeastern Illinois University.
Active in ACRL, George has served on the Budget and Finance Committee and currently serves on the Task Force on Library Statistics and the Steering Committee of the University Libraries Section. He chaired the Choice Editorial Board in 1975-78.
George was president of the Illinois Library Association in 1976-77 and chair of the Illinois Association of College and Research Libraries in 1973. He has also been a member of the Board of Directors of the Illinois Regional Library Council, chair of the Library Advisory Committee to the Illinois Board of Higher Education, and since 1979 has served as a member of the ILLINET OCLC Steering Committee.
He is a frequent keynote speaker at conferences, has been consultant on numerous library building projects, and has conducted workshops on library planning, automation, and collection development. His articles have been published in Catholic Library World and Hospital Libraries. He is a contributor to Multitype Library Cooperation, published by Bowker in 1977, and Information Resources in the Environmental Sciences, published by the University of Illinois in 1973.
Mary Ann Griffin
Mary Ann Griffinhas been appointed director of Falvey Memorial Library at Villanova University, Pennsylvania, effective January 1. She served as director of libraries at Xavier University, Cincinnati, since 1979 and in that capacity managed the main and branch campus libraries as well as a curriculum laboratory and campus audio-visual services. In 1974-1977 she was head of circulation and building services at Tufts University.
Griffin holds a bachelor’s degree in secondary education and a master’s in German literature from Pennsylvania State University, and an MLS and doctorate in library administration from Simmons College. She currently serves on the ACRL College Libraries Section’s Libraries in Closing Colleges Committee, and last year was vice-chair of the Academic Library Association of Ohio, an ACRL chapter.
Griffin has also served as president of the Xavier University Chapter of the American Association of University Professors and as president of the Greater Cincinnati Library Consortium.
JohnP. Kondelik, dean of libraries at Olivet College, Michigan, has been appointed director of the Irwin Library System at Butler University, Indianapolis, effective January 1.
Kondelik served as director of libraries at Olivet for seven years before his appointment as dean. He also served as acting director (1972-1973) and cataloger (1968-1974) at Eckerd College, St. Petersburg, Florida. At Olivet he was instrumental in the reorganization and development of library staff, facilities, and procedures, the expansion of reader services, and the preparation of Olivet’s self-study library report for accreditation.
John P. Kondelik
He received a bachelor’s degree in history from the University of Florida in 1964 and an MLS from Florida State University in 1966. He is currently completing his doctorate in higher education at the University of Michigan Center for the Study of Higher Education.
Charlene Rennerhas been appointed associate director of libraries for bibliographic control at the University of Washington, Seattle, effective March 1. She comes to Washington from Iowa State University where she has been assistant director of technical services. Prior to working at Iowa State, Renner held several positions at the University of Illinois, Urbana, including assistant director for central processing service, acting head of bibliographic records, librarian for the English Language and Literature Library, and head of Catalog Maintenance.
Renner holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in English literature from Northwestern University and an MLS from Drexel University. In 1980-1981 she served as a Council on Library Resources academic library management intern at the University of California, Berkeley.
Active in ALA, Renner most recently served as program committee chair for the 1983 LITA Conference in Baltimore. She is also chair-elect of the RTSD Technical Services Administrators of Medium-Sized Research Libraries Discussion Group and chair of the RTSD Technical Services Cost Committee. She currently serves on the editorial board for College & Research Libraries.
PatriciaC. Sharp has been named librarian of the Northwood Institute of Florida, West Palm Beach. She has been involved in developing libraries in Palm Beach County for over 15 years.
Sharp received her bachelor’s degree from Michigan State University and her MLS from the University of South Florida.
She is a member and past president of the Palm Beach County Library Association, the State of Florida Catholic Library Association, and the North Palm Beach branch of the American Association of University Women.

Millicent D. Abell,university librarian at the University of California-San Diego and former president of ACRL, has been elected chairman of the Board of Directors of the Center for Research Libraries. Abell, who will serve as chairman through January 1985, has served as a board member since 1979.
Karl Min Ku,a 1983 graduate of the Rosary College Graduate School of Library and Information Science, River Forest, Illinois, has been named head of the Bureau of Library and Information Services of the Legislative Congress in Taipei, Republic of China. Ku attended Rosary College as a visiting scholar through the joint efforts of the college, the Taiwan government, and the National Central Library in Taipei.
Russell Shank,university librarian at the University of California, Los Angeles, has been elected chairman of the OCLC Board of Trustees. He succeeds Miriam A. Drake, assistant director for library support services, Purdue University.

DamronS. Dennis, head of government documents at North Texas State University Libraries, Denton, retired on January 31 after 13 years of service.
Joseph Fletcher,head of reference at the Graduate Library of Business Administration, New York University, retired on August 1 after 22 years of service.
Betty Hermanhas retired as cataloger at the University of California, Los Angeles.
Rosemary Neiswenderhas retired as cataloger at the University of California, Los Angeles.
Michael Palijretired December 30 from his position as Slavic cataloger at the University of Kansas, Lawrence.
Rosemary Williamswill retire this summer as educational resources librarian at Ball State University, Muncie, Indiana, after 23 years of service.
John Zimmermanretired on December 31 after 26 years as Director of Frostburg State College Library, Maryland. He was formerly acquisitions librarian at the University of Georgia. Zimmerman served as president of the Maryland Library Association in 1965-1966, president of the Board of Directors for the Middle Atlantic Regional Library Federation in 1968-1974, and executive director of the Maryland Congress of Academic Library Directors in 1979-1981. He will continue as chairman of the Advisory Committee to the Maryland State Library Resource Center.
DEATHS
Diane Briceland,assistant reference librarian at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, died on November 28.
Lila Chandra,former reference librarian at the University of California, Berkeley, died on January 12 in Berkeley.
JamesW. Jackson, social science and documents librarian at the University of Richmond’s Boatwright Library, died on December 13. Prior to his coming to Richmond in 1974 he had served on the faculty at Brevard College.
HowardM. Myers, former head of the Editing and Publishing Section of the Library of Congress, died on October 7 in Washington, D.C.
DavidL. Olsen, head of the Order Department at the University of South Carolina Library, Columbia, collapsed and died as he approached the finish of a five-mile run on January 28. Olsen had been associated with USC since 1981.
LAMA PRECONFERENCE ON library BUILDINGS
The Building and Equipment Section of the ALA Library Administration and Management Association is holding a 2-day preconference on planning library buildings in Dallas on June 20-22, 1984. The preconference, entitled “Planning Library Buildings: From Decision to Design,” is cosponsored by ACRL.
The program will be directed at individuals with limited or no exposure to building planning activities, but it may also serve as a refresher for those without recent experience. It will include individual and panel presentations by experienced library building and planning professionals including Raymond Holt, Frazer Poole, Richard Waters, David Kaser, and others. LAMA also plans a behind-the-scenes tour of the new $42.7 million, 650,000 square foot Dallas Public Library.
The preconference is dedicated to Keyes D. Metcalf, a major contributor to excellence in academic library building planning, who died last November.
Registration is limited to 200 participants. The fee, which includes a banquet reception, is $100 for LAMA or ACRL members, $125 for other ALA members, and $150 for non-ALA members. Deadline for registration is June 8. No refunds will be given after June 15. Space permitting, on-site registrations will be accepted.
