James R. Kennedy, head librarian for the City of Lawrence, Massachusetts, has been appointed director of the Giesel Library at Saint Anselm College, Manchester, New Hampshire.

At Lawrence he served as library consultant to the Merrimack Valley Health Planning Council and was responsible for the organization and development of a health planning sciences library to serve both regional health planners and health care provider agencies. Before going to Lawrence,

Kennedy was library director of the Jonathan Bourne Public Library, Bourne, Massachusetts, where he instituted services for the handicapped and organized a cooperative effort among public, academic, and military base libraries.

Kennedy, a graduate of Stonehill College, holds an MLS degree from the University of Rhode Island and has done advanced studies at the Boston University School of Business Administration and the Miami (Ohio) University School of Business Administration. He began his library career as a part-time reference and circulation assistant at the Walpole Public Library in 1964.

George Charles Newman, director of Shafer Library and assistant dean for cultural arts at Findlay College, Ohio, has been named director of the Edward H. Butler Library at the State University of New York at Buffalo effective August 15.

Newman has directed library and media services at Findlay College since 1977 and was director of the L. Dale Dorney Community Arts Series at Findlay College for 1981-82.

Prior to his appointment at Findlay, Newman was director of library and media services and assistant dean at Golden West College, Huntington Beach, California, from 1975 to 1977.

Newman holds a bachelors degree in history from the University of Cincinnati (1965); a master of arts in teaching degree from Miami University, Ohio (1971); a masters in library science and educational technology from the University of Michigan (1972); and a Ph.D from the Center for the Study of Higher Education at the University of Michigan (1978).

Newman is the author of Leadership and the Politics of Innovative Change: Antioch College under Arthur H. Morgan (1982) and co-author of Limited Growth in Higher Education: Indicators, Impacts and Implications (1976). He has also authored several articles (including the Bibliographic Instruction column in the September 1982 C&RL News), papers and grants in the fields of librarianship, educational technology, history, and higher education.

PEOPLE IN THE NEWS

Evelyn P. Fancher, director of libraries and learning resources at Tennessee State University, Nashville, has been selected to develop an agricultural research library in Swaziland, Africa. The library will be used primarily by the researchers involved in an $11 million, five-year project, sponsored by the Swaziland government and the United States Agency for International Development. Penn State is the primary contractor for this project with Tennessee State University serving as a subcontractor. Fancher began her first service to the project in August.

Ajaye Bloomstone has been appointed cataloger in the University of Wyoming Libraries, Laramie.

Ruth A. Boettcher has joined the University of Wyoming Libraries, Laramie, as Health Sciences Information Network technical services librarian.

Kathleen M. Carney is now a cataloger for Loyola University of Chicago Libraries.

Margaret S. Child has been named assistant director of the Smithsonian Institution Libraries, Washington, where she will serve as manager of the Research Services Division.

John W. Collins, III, has been appointed head of the Educational Resources Library, Boston University.

Lenore Coral has been appointed music librarian at Cornell University, Ithaca, New York.

Paula Covington has been named coordinator of reference services at Vanderbilt s Central Library, Nashville.

Dorothy W. Cox has been appointed acquisitions librarian for the Law School Library of Loyola University of Chicago.

Adele Dendy has been appointed head of the Education Library, Indiana University, Bloomington.

Ben Wakashige has been appointed library director at the University of Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Susan E. Whitehead has been appointed head of the Reference Department, Countway Library of Medicine, Harvard University.

Catherine L. Whitesideis now a programmer in the Library Systems Office, University of California, Berkeley.

Dolores Williams has been named law librarian at the Thurgood Marshall School of Law, Texas Southern University, Houston.

Susan G. Williamson has been appointed social science librarian at Swarthmore College, Pennsylvania.

Margaret Wineburgh-Freed has been appointed catalog librarian at the University of Southern California’s Norris Medical Library, Los Angeles.

Michael Boyd Wood, acting university librarian at Ball State University, Muncie, Indiana, has been named dean of university libraries there.

Linda Zieper has been appointed reference librarian at Bradford College, Haverhill, Massachusetts.

RETIREMENTS

Mildred Elizabeth Dugas, head of cataloging at Yale University Library from 1975, retired on June 30.

Donald B. Engley retired on June 30 after 10 years of service as associate university librarian at Yale University.

Jack Jochim retired as business bibliographer for the Julia Deal Lewis Library of Loyola University of Chicago.

Louis Kiraldi,documents and maps librarian at Western Michigan University’s Waldo Library, retired on June 30 after 22 years of service to the University.

Mae Durham Roger retired on June 30 from the School of Library and Information Studies, University of California, Berkeley, after 23 years of service.

Donald A. Sinclair has retired from the Rutgers University Libraries where he had served over 30 years as head of Special Collections.

PlNG Kuen Yu,director of the Center for Chinese Research Materials of the Association of Research Libraries since 1968, retired on July 20.

DEATHS

Homer Bernhardt, head of the Engineering and Mathematics Libraries at the University of Pittsburgh, died on July 13.

Frank S. Hanlin, bibliographer at the University of Iowa Libraries, died on August 9 after 16 years in that position.

Mabel Junkert, the first head of the University of California, Riverside, Library’s Serials Department, died on July 25.

Helen Sheehan, emeritus librarian of Trinity College, Washington, D.C., died of cancer on May 10.

Emma Simonson, Latin American Studies area specialist art Indiana University from 1964 to 1976, died on June 28.

George T. Smisor, acquisitions librarian in the University of California, Riverside, Library from 1952 to 1968, died on July 17 in Medford, Oregon.

Ruth Velten, cataloger of Germanic materials at Indiana University from 1954 to 1975, died in Brunswick, Georgia, in June. ■■
