Pam Spiegel
Jane Dodd,director of the West Campus Library and assistant professor at Texas A&M University, recently re- ceived the Association of Former Students Distin- guished Achievement Award in Librarianship, which hon- ors superior achievement and service to faculty and students. One nominator wrote: “Ms. Dodd’s work has consistently been marked by a keen intellect, lofty stan- dards, and a propensity for hard work. She is a discerning taskmaster and a living model of the expectations she sets for her staff.”
Victoria L. Hanawalt,college librarian at Reed College in Portland, has assumed presidency of the 1996/97 OCLC Users Council following the resignation of William Crowe. Hanawalt was elected vice-president/president-elect in May.
K. Wayne Smith,president and chief execu- tive officer of OCLC Online Computer Library Center, was presented in August with the award of a Consulting Professorship by Tsinghua Uni- versity in Beijing, China. Smith is only the sixth person, and the first U.S. citizen, to be accorded this honor in Tsinghua’s 85-year history. He was cited for his “remarkable academic achievements and outstanding management experience.” Smith was in Beijing to open the new Tsinghua University OCLC Service Center and to attend the IFLA conference.
Carolyn A. Snyder,professor and dean of library affairs at Southern Illinois University (SIU), Carbondale, has been named Faculty Woman of Distinction at SIU. She was nominated by two library affairs faculty who described her as “an out- standing professional woman who combines the needs of program administration with the needs of program excellence and service.” Her technology initiative Carolyn A. Snyder and groundbreaking work in distance learning were par- ticularly noted. Katherine L. Walter, chair of the Serials Department at Love Library, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, was re- cently appointed national consultant to the AMIGOS Preservation Service (APS) Advisory Council. Walter previously served as the project evaluator for the 1991–92 and 1993–95 APS grants, is author and project director for two phases of the Nebraska Newspaper Project, and has developed statewide preservation plans for the states of Kansas and Nebraska.

Appointments
D. Russell Baileyhas been named library di- rector at Green Mountain College in Poultney, Vermont. Bailey last served as instructional ser- vices librarian at Eckerd College. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Florida Presbyterian (Eckerd) College, master’s degrees from the Universities of Kentucky and South Florida, and master’s and doctoral degrees from Louisiana State University.
Judith Lin Hunt
Judith Lin Hunthas been named university librarian of the Harry A. Sprague Library at Montclair State University in Upper Montclair, New Jersey. From January through June 1996 she was an ALA/USIA Library Fellow at the Universiti Brunei Darussalam. She has served as university librarian at the Univer- sities of Richmond and Bridgeport, and was a reference librarian and social sciences bibliographer at Queens College. She was elected vice-president/president-elect of the Virginia Library Association in 1995, but has since moved out of state. She has also held offices in Connecticut and Virginia professional organi- zations.
Kate D. Hickeyhas been appointed director of the Iris Holt McEwen Library at Elon College in North Carolina. She had been director of the John Shuman Library at the Pennsylvania Col- lege of Technology since 1984. Before that she held various reference positions in Pennsylva- nia public and government libraries. A mem- ber of ALA and ACRL, Hickey has served on three Community and Junior College Library Section committees and on the ACRL Profes- sional Education Committee in 1992–94. She was also an officer and board member of the Interlibrary Delivery Service of Pennsylvania and of the Council of Pennsylvania Library Net- works. She coedited Collection Management in the Electronic Age (ALA, 1994).
Hannelore Rader
Hannelore Rader,director of the University Library at Cleveland State University since 1987, has been appointed uni- versity librarian at the University of Louisville, effective January 6, 1997. Before joining Cleveland State, Rader served as director of the Library/ Learning Center at the University of Wisconsin- Parkside, and in several library positions at East- ern Michigan University. She was named winner of the Distinguished Education and Behavioral Sciences Librarian Award by ACRL in 1995 and served as ACRL president in 1986–87.
Wally Babcockhas been appointed reference librarian/computer services coordinator at the University of California, Riverside.
Amy Williams Boykinis the new assistant reference librarian at Christopher Newport University, Newport News, Virginia.

Retirements
Joan Chambers
Joan Chambersretired at the beginning of No- vember as dean of libraries at Colorado State University. While head of the Government Publica- tions Department at the University of Nevada- Reno Library, Chambers was a founding member of the ALA Government Documents Roundtable and was the first librar- ian to be elected chair of the University Faculty Senate. She was next ap- pointed assistant university librarian at the University of California-San Diego, then university librarian at the Univer- sity of California-Riverside. Professionally ac- tive, Chambers has served on numerous com- mittees, including those of the IFLA, ALA, ACRL, OCLC, and the Coalition for Networked Infor- mation. She has served as a member of the board for both the Research Libraries Group and the Association of Research Libraries, and was recently elected to the Board of Directors for Consumers Union, publisher of Consumer Reports.
Deaths
Eileen C. Bass,serials cataloger at Wake Forest University since 1987, died in September after a long illness. She was 47.
Clarissa O. Lewis,a librarian in the rare book area at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) until her retirement in 1971, died in September at the age of 93. Lewis graduated from Waldorf Junior College and earned a degree from the University of Iowa in 1925. After teaching for several years, she enrolled in the UIUC Library School from which she received her advanced degree in 1930. ian in 1982. She was well known for her work to preserve library materials and earned a reputation as a prolific writer and passionate teacher. Remembering Jesse Hauk Shera (1904–1982)
Jesse Hauk Shera,dean emeritus of the Baxter School of Informa- tion and Library Sciences, Case Western Reserve
University, died March 8 [1982] in Cleveland at the age of 78. Shera served as dean of the libraiy school from 1952 to 1970, and estab- lished the Center for Documentation and Com- munication Research there in 1955. Though he was partially blind from birth, he was an acknowledged visionary who saw far into the future of his profession.
Shera’s career in libraiy work began in 1927 when he became an assistant to the librarian at Miami University, Oxford, Ohio. The next year he became bibliographer and research associate at the Scripps Foundation for Research in Population Problems. In 1940 he was named chief of the census-library project at the Library of Congress to develop a collection in population and demography. The next year he was appointed deputy chief of the Central Information Division of the Office of Strategic Services. He left in 1944 to become associate librarian at the University of Chicago. In 1947–1952 he was associate professor at the University of Chicago Graduate Library School.
After his retirement from Case Western he served for one year as visiting professor at the Graduate Library School of the University of Texas, returning to Case as dean and professor emeritus in 1972.
Jesse Hauk Shera
Among his international honors, Shera served as international delegate to the UNESCO conferences on Interna- tional Bibliographic Or- ganization and Biblio- graphic Organization in the Social Sciences in Paris in 1950. The same year he was a delegate for the National Science Foundation to an inter- national conference on classification at Dorking, England. He was also a visiting lecturer at the Brazilian Institute for Bibliogra- phy and Documentation in Rio de Janeiro, at Bangalore, India, and at the London School of Librarianship.
His awards have included the Kaula, a gold medal from India, the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the University of Chicago, the Melvil Dewey Award from ALA, the Librarian of the Year Award from the Ohio Library Association, and the Ohioana Award from the Ohioana Foundation.
Shera’s many publications include An Introduction to Library Science (1976), Foundations of Education for Librarianship (1972), The Compleat Librarian (1970), and Libraries and the Organization of Knowledge (1965). He served as editor of American Documentation from 1953 to 1960 and as editor of Library Quarterly from 1947–52.

Susan Swartzburg,preservation librarian at Rutgers University, died in October following a brief illness after her return from the IFLA conference in Beijing. She was 58. Swartzburg joined Rutgers in 1972 as director of the Alexander Library and became preservation librarian in 1982. She was well known for her work to preserve library materials and earned a reputation as a prolific writer and passionate teacher.
