Binding study published

The Library Binding Institute (LBI) has published the re- sults of a binding structures study in Performance Mea- sures for Library Binding by Barclay Ogden and Robert Strauss. The study reports on a project to develop perfor- mance parameters for library binding and physical tests to measure those parameters. It also reports the results of the physical tests which were performed on various types of library bindings. Some of the bindings tested conformed to the specifications of the 8th edi- tion of Library Binding Institute Standard for Library Binding and others did not. This study may help librarians determine which structures are most appropriate for protecting their col- lections. Project Open Book report available

Yale University Library has published a report by Paul Conway called Conversion of Microfilm to Digital Imagery: A Demonstration Project, about the third phase of its Project Open Book. This 80-page report describes Project Open Book activities to date, noting the lessons learned in reformatting 2,000 monographs from preservation microfilm to digital files. Of particular interest are the cost study and the guidelines for cataloging image files in an Internet- accessible online bibliographic system. Commission copublishes review of MD

The Commission on Preservation and Access and the European Commission on Preservation and Access (ECPA) have copublished a 54-page report entitled Mass Deacidification: An Update on Possibilities and Limitations. Written by Henk Porck of the Koninklijke Bibliotheek in The Hague, the book reviews the history and technology of the Battelle, Bookkeeper, DEZ, FMC, and Wei T’o mass pro- cesses. It also covers four large-scale deacidification/ paper strengthening pro- cesses: the Bueck-eburg process, graft-copoly- merization, paper-splitting, and the Vienna process. Porck does not recommend any one method but presents the issues to consider so nonspecialists may evaluate mass deacidification for them- selves. It includes a bibliography and a list of contacts. NLC-BNC mounts bibliography on Web

The National Library of Canada/Bibliothèque nationale du Canada (NCL-BNC) has mounted an extensive but selective preservation bibliography on its homepage. The compilers, Suzanne Dodson and Johanna Wellheiser, attempted to identify resources that set standards for the preservation field. The site is organized by general categories (i.e., health and safety, environmental control) and formats (paper- based collections/records, optical and magnetic collections/records). Good news

The AMIGOS Preservation Service (APS) has been awarded a three-year, $486,154 grant by the Division of Preservation and Access of the National Endowment for the Humanities. The grant will not only ensure continued APS activities in Texas and the Southwest, but allow for expansion of services. NEH awarded funds to 54 preservation projects in its latest round. ■
