ACRL seeks volunteers for sections, committees, and editorial boards

You help set and achieve ACRL’s goals and objectives.

Are you interested in contributing to ACRL? There are opportunities for your involvement in ACRL sections and standing committees. To be considered for appointment, complete the accompanying form and return to the appropriate individual. The following information explains how you can be considered for a committee appoint- ment.

ACRL sections

ACRL has 16 sections (their names are listed below). You will find a description of their areas of responsibility in the ALA Handbook of Organization, 1991-92.

The chair-elect of a section appoints the chair and members of all section committees. Most of these appointments are made in the spring for terms beginning immediately after the ALA Annual Conference. If you would like to be considered for appointment as chair or member of a section committee, fill out the ACRL Committee Volunteer Form and mail it to the chair-elect of the appropriate section listed below before December 15, 1991.

ACRL committees

ACRL has about 20 standing committees to which appointments may be made. These include such committees as Audiovisual, Copyright, Government Relations, Racial and Ethnic Diversity, Research, and Standards and Accreditation. ACRL also has various award committees and committees that help with the work of the association, e.g., Budget, Membership, and Planning. You will find a complete list of the committees and a description of their charges in the ALA Handbook of Organization, 1991-92.

Appointments to ACRL standing committees are made in the spring for terms beginning immediately after the ALA Annual Conference. The Appointments and Nominations Committee recommends to the president-elect of ACRL the names of members who might fill the vacancies. The president-elect makes the final appointments. If you are interested in being considered for an appointment to an ACRL committee, you should complete the ACRL Committee Volunteer Form included in this issue of CirRL News and mail it to Hiram L. Davis, Director of Libraries, Michigan State University Libraries, East Lansing, MI 48824- 1048 before December 15, 1991.

Editorial boards

ACRL has six editorial boards:

• the Choice Editorial Board;

• the College ir Research Libraries Editorial Board;

• the College ir Research Libraries News Editorial Board;

• the New Publications Editorial Board;

• the Publications in Librarianship Editorial Board;

• the Rare Books ir Manuscripts Librarian- ship Editorial Board.

Appointments to editorial boards are made during Midwinter for terms that begin immediately after the ALA Annual Conference. The editors recommend the name of a person to fill the vacancy. The Publications Committee must approve the recommendation, and the president of ACRL makes the appointment.

If you would like to be considered for appointment to an editorial board, contact the editor of the editorial board before December 15, 1991.

Remember that at any given time there are only a limited number of vacancies on ACRL’s committees, sections, and editorial boards. If at first you don’t succeed in obtaining an appointment, try again. Make yourself known to committee chairs by sitting in on meetings, volunteering to help with committee projects, etc. If committee chairs see that you are interested in the work of their committees, they may recommend your name to the appropriate appointing body when a vacancy occurs.

Register in November

Preliminary program and registration materials for the Sixth National Conference will be available in November. The registration rate for ACRL members is $135 and $255 for nonmembers. Additional conference information is available from the ACRL office, (800) 545- 2433, ext. 2516.

ACRL VOLUNTEER FORM

ACRL would like you to participate in its activities.To volunteer, please complete the form and return it to the appropriate individual.

RACKGROUND INFORMATION:

On a separate single sheet of paper briefly summarize your background and activities in the following areas:

• ALA professional activities;

• ACRL professional activities;

• state and regional offices held and committee appointments;

• educational background and/or other professional experience that will assist the committee in the appointment process;

• publications;

• express your professional concerns and the contribution that you can make toward strengthening ACRL;

• list any other professional organizations to which you belong. Please indicate those organizations (if any) for which you would be willing to serve as the ACRL liaison.

Note: Membership in ALA and ACRL is required. Attendance at Midwinter and Annual Conference is required. U se duplicate forms if you are interested in both a standing committee and a section appointment.
