And the winners are...: The official results of the 1999 ACRL elections

Larry L. Hardesty

Lizabeth (Betsy) Wilson

Larry Hardesty, college librarian and professor at Austin College, is the 62nd president of ACRL.

As president, Hardesty will preside over the ACRL Board of Directors and ACRL Executive Committee, chair the ACRL Conference Program Planning for the 2000 Annual Conference, and plan ACRL’s major program at the conference. He will work with the ALA president and other division presidents representing ACRL both within and outside of ALA.

“I look forward to an exciting and rewarding year working with my colleagues in ACRL. I will preside over ACRL as we end one millennium and begin another. This is a time to reflect on where we have been, where we are now, and where we are going.

“Therefore, the theme of my presidency is ‘Celebrating Our Successes, Confronting Our Challenges: ACRL Enters the 21st Century.’ As part of ‘Celebrating Our Successes,’ I have worked with Blackwell’s Books and Blackwell’s Information Services to sponsor a new ‘Excellence in Academic Libraries Award Program’ to be administrated by ACRL.

“Blackwell’s sponsorship will support three annual awards of $3,000 each by type of academic library to honor librarians and other library staff members who work as a team to provide exemplary library support and to support outstanding programs and best practices (Ed. note: see News from the Field page 435).

“As part of ‘Confronting Our Challenges,’ I encourage ACRL to seek additional avenues to attract more and better-qualified individuals to the profession of academic librarianship. I have created a task force on recruiting, chaired by Cindy Swigger, library director at Texas Wesleyan University.

“In addition, I support the revision of the Strategic Plan and the continuation of initiatives such as the Institute for Information Literacy, the professional liaison program, and the legislative advocacy initiative, begun by my predecessors and other ACRL members.

“I am fortunate to follow the strong leadership of an organization with a highly capable membership and a very dedicated staff. While this past year has been a busy year, it also has been a very enjoyable year. As long as it is fun, ‘it ain’t work!’ I look forward to another ‘fun’ year of working with my ACRL colleagues.”

Hardesty previously served as director of Library Services and professor of Eckerd College (1983-1995); head of reference at DePauw University (1975-1983); and reference librarian at Kearney State College (19731975).

In ALA he has served on the Special Committee on Alternative Sources of Funding for Academic Libraries (1989-1990). He has been a life member of ACRL since 1978, serving on the Board of Directors (1987-1991), chairing the College Libraries Section (1995-1996), and chairing numerous committees at the section and division level.

In 1996, the Instruction Section named him winner of its Publication of the Year Award for his article “Bibliographic Instruction and Faculty Culture,” published in Library Trends.

Hardesty is also an active member of the Texas Library Association; he was the Florida ACRL Chapter president (1986-1987); on the Florida Library Association Board of Directors (1988-1990); and he was Indiana ACRL Chapter President-elect (1982).

He holds a B.A. Education (History/Political Science) and M.S. in Education (History) from University of Nebraska-Kearney; MLS from University of Wisconsin-Madison; M.S. in Education (Instruction Systems Technology); and Ph.D. (Library and Information Science) from Indiana University in Bloomington.

Lizabeth (Betsy) Wilson, associate director of Libraries for Research and Instructional Services at the University of Washington, has been elected vice-president/president-elect of ACRL.

“It is an enormous personal privilege to have been elected. For nearly two decades, I have depended on ACRL to keep me connected with colleagues, energized with new ideas, and grounded on pivotal issues in higher education, and learning continuously. During my term, I will seek ways to further the commitment of ACRL members to affect and influence, to inspire and guide, and to support our individual and collective learning.

“As academic librarians engender connections and lead on campus and in our communities, ACRL can support us. ACRL can help us move outward from our institutions into the interconnected worlds of higher education, K12, extended communities, global partners, and those who employ our graduates.

“I will seek to expand ACRL’s unique position as a catalytic home for integrative efforts such as the Institute for Information Literacy, which will allow us to build the collaborations and showcase best practices necessary for our future success as academic librarians.”

Prior to joining the University of Washington in 1992, Wilson was the assistant director of Libraries for Undergraduate and Instructional Services at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). She has worked in the area of teaching and learning in libraries for 20 years, publishing and presenting widely on teaching, learning, and technology; educational collaborations; and assessment and evaluation.

Wilson has held numerous leadership roles in ALA and ACRL, including chair of the Instruction Section and member-at-large of ALA Council. She is member of the steering committee for the Institute for Information Literacy which is “dedicated to playing a leadership role in assisting individuals and institutions in integrating information literacy throughout the educational process.”

In 1995 she was the recipient of ACRL’s Miriam Dudley Instruction Librarian Award.

She has been co-administrator of the UWired program at the University of Washington since its inception in 1994.

Wilson has also been active in various state and regional library associations: Seattle Educational Pipeline Project Advisory Board (1997 to present); Illinois State Library Automation Committee (1986-90); and Illinois Library Computer System Organization (ILCSO) Statistics Committee (1986-90) and Interface Subcommittee (1987-91).

Her membership in other professional organizations and learned societies include the American Association of Higher Education (1995 to present); OCLC Pacific Delegate to Users Council (1996-2001); and the OCLC Users Council vice-president/president-elect (1998-2000).

Wilson holds a B.A. in Art History and German from Northwestern University (1977) and an MLS from UIUC (1978).
