21-26—Management: An ARL/OMS Advanced Management Skills Institute, sponsored by the Western Canadian University Libraries, will be held in Jasper, Alberta, at the Lobstick Lodge. Senior-level librarians will learn about organizational problem-solving, team-building, and strategic planning. Registration fee: $425 for ARL members; $470 for non-members. 27-28—ACRL/New England: “Building Good Working Relationships” will be the theme of the ACRL/New England Chapter’s spring conference to be held at Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire. Three sessions will make up the conference: “Working with Change,” “Coping with Conflict,” and “Getting and Keeping the Best.” Registration fee: $35 for members; $40 for non-members; $10 for library students. 4-6—Archives: The annual spring meeting of the Midwest Archives Conference will be held at the Bismarck Hotel in Chicago, Illinois. A session on “Strengthening Relationships with Other Professional Organizations” will highlight the meeting. Other session topics will include documentation strategies, funding, radical social history, collection analysis case studies, archival education, and microfilming. Special events include a reception at the Historical Society, restaurant tours, and a White Sox game. Registration fee: $15 ($18 after April 24). Contact: Shirley J. 7-9—International librarianship: “Librarians and International Development,” a national conference sponsored by the Indiana University Libraries and Office of International Affairs, Indiana University, Bloomington. Speakers will include Hwa-Wei Lee, Ohio University; David Kaser and Patrick O’Meara, Indiana University; Robert Tabachnik, University of Wisconsin; and Mary Popp, Indiana University. Session topics include “Getting Around in the World,” “Libraries in the People’s Republic of China,” and “Working with Consultants.” Registration fee: $30. 12-13—Storytelling: The Twelfth Annual Storytelling Workshop, sponsored by the University of Washington Graduate School of Library and Information Science, Seattle, titled “Storytelling—A Key to Oral Traditions,” will feature author Sheila Egoff. The conference will include a master class, keynote address, and workshops, and will conclude with a storytelling festival. 17-19—Exhibitions: The Metropolitan Museum of Art will sponsor a program on “Preservation and Exhibition of Books and Manuscripts.” Through lectures, discussions, tours, and hands-on instruction, participants will explore principles of exhibiting books, archives, and ephemera. Sessions include the methodology of installation, exhibition design, environmental control, and preservation planning. 19-20—Indexing: The 21st annual meeting of the American Society of Indexers, “Indexing in the 90s,” will be held at the Marriott at Fisherman’s Wharf, San Francisco. The two one-day sessions will focus on 1) trends in the traditional publishing market and growing electronic publishing market, and 2) back-of-the-book indexing including medical, periodical, and technical. 25-26—Archives: Fenway Libraries Online and the Society of American Archivists will sponsor “Understanding the MARC Format for Archival and Manuscript Control” at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. Through informal lectures and exercises in tagging archival descriptions, participants will learn the structure and use of the Archives and Manuscripts Control (AMC) MARC format. 10-14, 24-28—Preservation: The Milton S. Eisenhower Library at Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, Maryland, will offer two fiveday summer workshops on library and archives collections conservation. Their purpose is to educate staff directly responsible for conservation in the use of economical approaches to the preservation of books and flat paper materials.
