Judith Genesen, former director of information services at the Chicago Transit Authority, has been named executive director of the American Association of Law Libraries. Genesen began her career as science librarian at the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools High School, then worked as reference librarian for the Joint Reference Library. She joined the CTA in 1974 as head reference librarian, then became supervisor of forms, records, and procedures.

Sally Sparks Leach, acting assistant to the director of the Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center (HRHRC) at the University of Texas, Austin, has been named assistant director of the Research Center. She has held positions with the university’s rare books collections since 1965, and has also been acting librarian at HRHRC. Leach received both her MLS and bachelor’s degree from UT Austin, and is the author of several HRHRC exhibition catalogs, including Lord Byron and The Finest Adventure: Scholars at Work.

K. Wayne Smith, President and CEO of K. Wayne Smith and Associates, a management consulting and holding company, has been named President and Chief Executive Officer of OCLC, Dublin, Ohio. Smith received his bachelor’s degree from Wake Forest University, and his master’s and Ph.D. degrees from Princeton University. He has served as director of program analysis for the National Security Council in Washington; program director at the RAND Corporation; an executive with Dart Industries; group managing partner, operations, for Coopers and Lybrand; and chairman and CEO of World Book, Inc. In the late 1960s he co-authored a book entitled, How Much Is Enough? Shaping the Defense Program 1961-1969. Smith will become the third president in OCLC’s history, succeeding Rowland Brown, who is stepping down after eight years.

Carol A. White has been appointed reference librarian at the Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, after four years as assistant football coach at Georgia Tech. She is the only female member of the American Football Coaches Association. While coaching the football team, she worked part-time as an interlibrary loan specialist at the Georgia Tech Department of Research Information Services and pursued a Ph.D. in organizational behavior. In the summer she runs the Georgia Tech Kicking Clinic, a summer camp for football kickers and punters, and she also owns a company that is developing commercial kicking practice equipment. She was featured in an article in the Fall 1988 issue of Florida State Magazine, “Georgia Tech’s First Lady of College Football.”

Retirements

Curt Goldstaub, head catalog librarian at Kutztown University, Pennsylvania, retired after 18 years of service.

Elsie Kennet retired after 8 years of service as a reference librarian and ten years of service as an instructor of library science and librarian in the Campus Research and Learning Center.

Jae Hwi Myong, biomedical cataloger at the University of California, Irvine, retired on February 28 after nearly 20 years of service. His previous positions included appointments at Yonsei University in Seoul, Korea, Columbia University, and the New York Academy of Medicine Library.

Robert W. Oram, director of Central University Libraries at Southern Methodist University, Dallas, will retire on July 1. He came to SMU in 1979 from the University of Illinois at Urbana- Champaign, where he had been acting director and associate director. Previously he had been at the University of Missouri in various roles, including assistant to the director. Since 1980 he has been executive director of the Friends of SMU Libraries. A life member of ALA, Oram has served on many of its committees and editorial boards, including chair of the Booklist Editorial Board and the Notable Books Committee. He reviewed books for PBS radio station WILL in Urbana for many years.

Jack Slater, associate director of Hagerty Library at Drexel University, Philadelphia, retired in September 1988 after 24 years of service. He first held the title of head of acquisitions in September 1964, was appointed to assistant director in March 1966, and associate director of libraries in July 1971. Slater has been on the library staff at Elizabethtown College, Pennsylvania, prior to coming to Drexel in 1964. He holds a baschelor’s degree from the City College of New York and a MLS from the University of Michigan.

Ellen Thomas, head of the Physical Sciences Library at Cornell University, Ithaca, New York, will retire in June after 35 years of service. She became department head in 1969.

Don Williams, classics librarian at the University of California, Berkeley, retired on December 31 after 26 years of service. Williams received his MLS from Berkeley in 1955 and then worked briefly at Los Angeles State College. He returned to Berkeley to work in the Catalog Department from 1957 to 1961, concentrating on cataloging materials in English and Romance languages. In 1961 he moved to Dallas to take a position in the Southern Methodist University Science Library as head of its Periodicals and Government Documents Department. Back in Berkeley again in 1964, he resumed cataloging responsibilities, taking a break in 1967-1969 to earn a French certificate from the Université de Paris and a master’s degree in French literature from Berkeley. In 1969 he returned as a reference librarian and then became head of the Interlibrary Borrowing Service. In 1979 he joined the Collection Development/Reference Services Department, serving with distinction as both classics librarian and librarian for French and Italian Collections.

Deaths

Joseph M. Dagnese, director of libraries at Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana, died on January 27 of lung cancer. He had been director since 1972.

Dagnese received his bachelor’s degree in English literature from Boston College in 1949. In 1951 he received a master’s degree in English literature and in 1952 an MLS from the Catholic University of America. He studied German literature at Heidelberg University in 1954-1955. He served as assistant head of cataloging at Catholic University from 1955 to 1957; document librarian with Nuclear Metals, Inc., in 1957-1960; and head of acquisitions, science librarian, head of circulation, and assistant director for technical services at the

Massachusetts Institute of Technology from 1960 to 1971.

He served as library consultant on a Ford Foundation program at Birla Institute of Technology and Science in India in 1967 and Delhi University in 1970. In 1983 he was selected as one of 15 librarians to participate in the Senior Fellows Program at the University of California, Los Angeles.

Dagnese was president of the Special Libraries Association in 1979-1980. He was serving as the SLA representative to the International Federation of Library Associations at the time of his death. He was on the Board of the Center for Research Libraries from 1981 to 1984 and was president of the Universal Serials and Book Exchange in 1985.

Thomas Hezekiah Mott Jr., professor in the School of Communication, Information and Library Studies, Rutgers University, Brunswick, New Jersey, died on January 17 while on vacation in Puerto Rico. He had served as dean of the Rutgers Graduate School of Library and Information Studies from 1969 to 1983. His major accomplishment was leading the library school into a merger with the Department of Communication and the Department of Journalism and Mass Media, resulting in the new School of Communication, Information and Library Studies in 1982.
