By the time you read this issue it will be too late to apply for a federal fellowship to study for a master’s or a doctorate degree in an accredited library school this fall. However, you should apply by December if you want to be considered for one for the fall of 1969.

It will be several months before grants will be awarded to library schools for 1969-70 fellowships under the Title II-B program of the Higher Education Act. However, it is advisable to write to the schools now. If the school you prefer receives no federal fellowships, or receives too few to help all the good students who apply, the school may be able to inform you concerning financial assistance available from other sources.

For the academic year 1968-69, 14 library schools in 11 states awarded a total of 168 doctoral fellowships granted under the Title II-B program. Eight schools were granted 47 post-master’s fellowships; two of these schools were in states other than the 11 where doctoral fellowships were awarded. Each of the 215 doctoral and post-master’s fellowships carried a stipend of $5,000 for the academic year; if summer study is required, a stipend of $170 a week is provided, not to exceed a total of $1,020. In addition, $600 is granted for each of the fellow’s dependents for the academic year and $120 for the summer. Travel expenses to and from the institution are granted for the fellow only. Post-master’s and doctoral fellowships may be renewed for a second and a third year.

Fifty-one library schools in 27 states and the District of Columbia awarded master’s fellowships this fall. These fellowships each carry a stipend of $2,200 for the academic year. If summer study is required, an additional stipend of $75 a week, not to exceed a total of $450, is provided. The same financial arrangements for dependents and travel are available for master’s candidates as for the other two groups.

Students seeking federal fellowships must apply directly to the library schools to which these fellowships were granted. The schools have sole responsibility for selecting recipients. Our office receives many inquiries about fellowships. We can only respond to these inquiries by providing the addresses of the library schools which have been awarded the grants.

Announcing a new, weekly magnetic tape index service by Pandex

Beginning October 1968, Pandex is making available its interdisciplinary bibliographic subject/author index of scientific and technical periodicals on a weekly tape basis.

Over 2,000 major journals in all disciplines of pure and applied sciences as well as over 6,000 new books each year and U.S. Government research reports are indexed by significant subjects and cross-referenced in conjunction with the 65,000-word Pandex thesaurus. Subject entries contain full title, primary author, and periodical reference. Author entries are indexed by both primary and secondary authors, and include full title and periodical reference.

Program for subscribers

The Pandex tape service is created on an IBM 360 from a continually expanding data base. Coding is ebcdic Or BCDIC.

A tape subscriber receives a set of programs for printout and retrospective search. In addition, Pandex provides a complete program for in-house sdi service.

Pandex back index records are available, prices on request. Sample tapes and printout programs are available for evaluation purposes.
