Mr. Davis
Richard Alban Davisreturned to The John Crerar Library on September 9, 1968, where he will supervise the Midwest Regional Medical
Library established at
Crerar under a grant from the National Library of Medicine,
National Institute of Health.
During his prior service at Crerar he served as chief of Technology Reference Service followed by a year as chief of the SLA Translations Center. Since leaving Crerar in October
1959, he has had a variety of assignments which will serve as pertinent experience for his new position. For one year, he was Librarian in the Laboratories for Applied Sciences at the University of Chicago, before joining the faculty of Drexel Institute of Technology, Graduate School of Library Science. There he taught courses on “Organization and Administration of Special Libraries,” “Reference Materials in Science and Technology,” “Introduction to Information Science,” and “Organization and Administration of Information Centers.”
Since September 1966, he has been working on his doctorate at the Graduate Library School, University of Chicago, and teaching a course in “Organization, Evaluation, and Use of Library Materials: Natural Sciences,” and conducting a “Seminar on Organization and Administration of Special Libraries.” For two summers he served as a consultant in the Office of Education in Washington, in the Educational Resources Information Center (ERIC) and in Library and Information Sciences Research. During the summer of 1968, he conducted a “Seminar on Reference Services” at Rosary College.
Even his work experience prior to formal entry into librarianship is a reminder of a statement made by the late Sydney B. Mitchell, dean of the library school in Berkeley, “Almost any work you have ever done will be useful to you as a Librarian.” Dick worked as editor of The Farmers’ Weekly Review, as a life insurance agent, as a supervisor in the Bio-Process Company in Joliet, Illinois, and as flight officer in the Navy. He is welcomed back to the Crerar staff.—Herman H. Henkle, The John Crerar Library.
