Mr. Polan

In July, 1966, Morris Polan became college librarian, California State College at Los Angeles, succeeding William Eshelman who left to head the library at Bucknell University. A freeway college with an enrollment of approximately twenty thousand, Cal State at Los Angeles next year will celebrate its twentieth anniversary.

The problems created by this explosive growth are nothing new to Mr. Polan. Since he joined the staff in 1955 he has dealt continuously with them, first as periodicals librarian and then successively as supervising reference librarian, chief of reader services, and acting college librarian. He is a graduate of the University of California at Los Angeles, where he has also done graduate work in political science, and he holds the MSLS degree from the University of Southern California. Before coming to Cal State he was a librarian in the Los Angeles municipal reference library and later served as serialsreference librarian in the Hancock library of biology and oceanography of the University of Southern California. He has been active in professional library organizations, serving last year as president of the College, University, and Research Libraries Section (CURLS) of the California Library Association.

Books and people, the twin poles of librarianship, seem to attract him equally. Books are his sustenance and solace. It is a rare conversation to which he does not bring some phrase, some thought, from the wide field of his reading. And I have sometimes met him in the stacks searching for a particular passage which the experiences of the day have prompted him to reread. People are his delight. He never tires of observing them, their mannerisms, their motivations, the games they play. He heartily enjoys the daily human comedy, but with immense tolerance and sympathy.

His administrative creed he sums up in the words. Collegiality, Congeniality, Reality. The greatest of these, he says, is reality, which must be faced, however harsh. Collegially, his staff shares to a large extent in the making of decisions, while the general air of congeniality is in the main a reflection of his own affable nature.

His wife, Cecelia Hassan Polan, was for many years a librarian at UCLA and more recently with Douglas Aircraft. They have two teen age daughters, Miriam and Ruth.— Martha Hackman.

APPOINTMENTS

Henry L. Alsmeyer, Jr. has been appointed assistant reference librarian at Texas A&M University library.

Mrs. Linda An joined the catalog staff of Drexel Institute of Technology libraries on Dec. 1.

Richard S. Angell has been appointed chief of the newly created technical processes research office in the Library of Congress processing department.

Mrs. Joyce Ball has been appointed head of the government publications department of the University of Nevada library.

Mrs. Linnea Biles is a cataloger in Ablah library of Wichita State University (Kans.).

Paul Boytinck has joined the staff of Bucknell University as periodicals librarian.

Mrs. Ina C. Brownridge has been appointed assistant librarian in the cataloging department, State University of New York at Binghamton.

Cecil Byrd, university librarian at Indiana University, will be in Indonesia during March working on a study of developmental book activities in East Asia for the AID.

Elizabeth R. Casellas is now head of business, science and technology department, Orlando public library (Fla.).

Betty Brooks Flowers became assistant reference librarian of the New York University Medical Center library on Jan. 1.

Ray MacNair Fry has been named director of the division of library services and educational facilities in the U.S. Office of Education.

Roger Hanson has been appointed assistant to the director of the University of Minnesota libraries, Jan. 1.

Richard Helfman has been appointed to the position of assistant head of the reference department of the Engineering Societies library.

Ann Huffman is now acquisitions librarian, Hume library. University of Florida.

John Jenson has been appointed instructor and librarian in special collections department, University of Minnesota, Jan. 1.

On Jan. 1, Roy S. C. Johnson, assistant reference librarian of New York University medical center library, was promoted to supervising librarian of the medical library, Goldwater Memorial Hospital, Welfare Island, New York, an affiliate of New York University.

David Kaser, director of the Joint University Libraries, Nashville, and editor of CRL, will be in Laos during parts of February and March studying developmental book activity in East Asia for the AID.

Chai K. Kim has joined the staff of State University College at Geneseo, N.Y., as an assistant librarian.

Mrs. Dorothy Knight is a new member of the catalog staff, in Ablah library, Wichita State University (Kans.).

Named to a new position, in the library at California State Polytechnic College, Pomona, Lloyd A. Kramer is chief, readers’ services division of the library.

Walther Liebenow has been appointed assistant professor and chief circulation librarian, University of Minnesota library, Jan. 1.

William Mathews has been named assistant director of Project TIP, at MIT. In his new position, Mr. Mathews will have over-all responsibility as assistant director of Project TIP, as well as the specific task of designing and supervising the transition from present circumstances to the new generation of computers a year or so from now.

Janet Neese was named an assistant librarian in State University College at Geneseo, N.Y.

Daniel J. Reed has been appointed deputy director of the staff of the National Advisory Commission on Libraries.

Robert Raymond is now head of the serials department, University of Nevada library.

Sam Schrag has joined the reference staff of Ablah library, Wichita State University (Kans.).

Mrs. Blanche Small recently joined the staff of Ablah library, Wichita State University (Kans.) as a cataloger.

Marvin E. Smith has been named head, acquisitions department, California State Polytechnic College library.

Wilbur J. Stewart joined the staff of Oakland University, Rochester, Mich., as acquisitions librarian, on Jan. 1.

C. Walter Stone, director of libraries at the University of Pittsburgh, will spend part of January and February in Thailand participating in a study of developmental book activities in East Asia for the AID.

Noreen Sunderland has just been appointed librarian of the Desert Research Institute, University of Nevada.

Richard W. Vierich has been named chief, technical services division of the California State Polytechnic College library.
