A look at who’s running

Jon E. Cawthorne is dean of Wayne State University Library System and the School of Information Sciences, a position he has held since 2017. Prior to this, Cawthorne served as dean of libraries at West Virginia University (2014–17), as associate dean of public services and assessment at Florida State University (2012–14), and as associate university librarian for Public Services at Boston College (2011–12).

Cawthorne is currently a member of the ACRL 2019 Conference Colleagues Committee (2017–present). During his 24 years of ACRL membership, he has served as chair of the ACRL Diversity Alliance Steering Committee (2016–present) and as a member of the ACRL President’s Program Committee (2015–17). Previously, he was a member of the ACRL New Publications Advisory Board (2015), the ACRL Friends’ Fundraising Committee (2007–10), the ACRL Publications Coordinating Committee (2006–08), the ACRL Poster Sessions Committee (2003–05), and the ACRL President’s Program Planning Committee (2002–04). Additionally, Cawthorne’s work within ALA includes being a mentor for the LLAMA Mentoring Program (2018), a member of both the ALA Nominating Committee (2006–08) and the Office of Diversity Director Search Committee (2007), along with serving as chair of the ALA Spectrum Advisory Committee (2006–07) and the ALA Lippincott Award Committee (2006–07). He was a member of the Spectrum Initiative Institute (2004–08 and 1999–2000), the ALA Awards Committee (2003–06), and the Peggy Sullivan Awards Committee (2004–05). He served on the ALA Publishing Committee (2000–02), the 5th National Conference Site Selection Committee (1999–2001), the ALA/PLA New Leaders Travel Grant Committee (2001), and the Dr. John C. Tyson Scholarship Committee (1996–99). Cawthorne developed and comanaged the Black Caucus of the American Library Association (BCALA) homepage (1995–99), served as chair of the 4th National Conference New Member Orientation (1998), and sat on the BCALA Executive Board (1995–97).

Cawthorne’s work with state, regional, and other national associations include successfully gaining membership into the Greater Western Library Alliance for West Virginia University (2015) and Wayne State University (2017), serving as board member at-large of the Greater Western Library Alliance (2015–17), president of the Pennsylvania Academic Library Consortia (2016), cochair of the Michigan Library Association’s Special Events Committee (2000), and chair of the Oregon State Library Association’s Membership Committee (1996–97).

Cawthorne was a presenter at the Harvard Leadership Institute for Academic Librarians in 2017 and 2018. He was selected for the 2011–13 ARL Research Library Fellows Program. He also took part in the UCLA Senior Fellows as a participant in 2007 and as a presenter in 2017. He has received the BCALA Advocacy Award (2015). He also received ALA’s John Cotton Dana Award the San Diego State University Library and Information Access for Marketing Spirit of the Land (2005), the “Outstanding 25” at San Diego State University for campus and community work Spirit of the Land (2004), and the Outstanding Faculty Award Presented by Office of Multicultural Affairs at the University of Oregon (1997). He serves as an Advisory Board member and faculty for the University of North Carolina-Greensboro Diversity Residency Institute. He is also cofounder of the ACRL Diversity Alliance and of the Michigan Digital Publishing Institute.

His publications include: “On Becoming: The ten thousand hours towards positive leadership,” in Crucible Moments: Inspiring Library Leadership, edited by Steven Bell, (Santa Barbara: Mission Bell Media, 2015); Scenario planning to create future scenarios: A Guidebook for Librarians coauthored by Joan Giesecke (Chicago: American Library Association, 2015); and “Leading from the Middle: An Examination of Shared Leadership in Academic Libraries,” for Journal of Academic Librarianship 36, issue 2 (March 2010).

Anne Marie Casey is the director of Hunt Library at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, where she has worked since 2009. Prior to this position, Casey provided 17 years of service to Central Michigan University, where she served as associate dean of libraries (2002–09), director of off-campus library services (1999–2002), and as a distance learning librarian (1991–99).

Casey is currently cochair of the ACRL/LLAMA Interdivisional Committee on Building Resources (2017–19) and a member of ACRL 2019 Virtual Conference Committee (2017–19). She was cochair of the ACRL 2017 President’s Program Committee (2015–17). During her 26 years of ACRL membership, she has served as member of the ACRL University Libraries Section Conference Program Committee (2015–16, 2017–18) and has worked intensely with the ACRL Distance Learning Section, where she has served as vice-chair (2012–13), chair (2013–14), and past chair (2014–15). She served as the chair of the DLS Outreach Committee (2013–15), as a member of the DLS Research Committee (2014–16), and chair of the DLS Membership and Events Committee (2009–13). Casey also served as a member of the DLS Conference Program Planning Committee (1994–95, 1996–98, and 2007–09) and as chair (1998–99). She was chair of the DLS Strategic Planning Committee (2007–09), a member of the DLS Social Events Planning Committee (2006–08), and served as chair of the DLS Nominations Committee (2003–04). She served as chair of the DLS Liaison Committee (1999-2001) and cochair of DLS Communications Committee (1995–97). Casey’s work within ALA includes serving as a member of the LLAMA Program Committee (2011–13), the New Members RoundTable Orientation Committee (1988–90), the Publicity Committee (1990), and the Students to ALA Reception Committee (1987).

Casey’s work with state, regional, and other national associations includes serving on the Florida Library Association (FLA) Board of Directors (2017–present), as chair of the FLA Strategic Planning Committee (2015–16) and as a member of the Planning Committee (2013–15) and Leadership Development Committee (2011–13). She also served on the Florida Association of College and Research Libraries Board of Directors (2011–16) and on the Northeast Florida Library Information Network Board of Directors (2012–14), where she also served as president (2014–15). Casey served on the Michigan Library Association (MLA) Board of Directors (2006–07), as chair of the MLA Conference Sponsorship Committee (2006–07), as a member of the Membership Committee (1993–94, 2006–07), as chair of the Conference Planning Committee (2004–05), as member at-large of the MLA Academic Division (2003–05), and as a member of the Conference Planning Committee (2003). She was also a member of the Massachusetts Library Association Intellectual Freedom Committee (1986–87).

Casey formed a coalition of research faculty and staff at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University to secure funding for an institutional repository called Scholarly Commons. Since its implementation in 2013, she has led the university oversight team that develops and maintains the repository for the project. She also chaired the committee that developed the current Florida Library Association’s strategic plan. She received the ACRL DLS Haworth Press Distance Learning Librarian Award and the Information Literacy Forum Information Literacy Star (2007).

Her publications include, “Does Tenure-Matter? Factors Influencing Faculty Contributions to Institutional Repositories” for Journal of Librarianship and Scholarly Communication (Volume 1, Number 1, 2012); “Strategic Priorities: A Roadmap Through Change for Library Leaders” for Library Leadership and Management (Volume 29, Number 2, 2015), ALA Publishing; and coauthorship of “Untapped Potential: Seeking Library Donors among Alumni of Distance Learning Programs” for Journal of Library Administration (Volume 50, Numbers 5/6, 2010), Taylor and Francis.
