The last few installments of Scholarly Communication articles have provided insight into models for open access journals and examples of various types of organizations that have been working in this arena. This month’s article, “Open access in the real world,” shifts focus to explore economic and legal aspects that pose challenges to the idea of open access. The author’s explication of these issues provides a basis for future discussions about open access.

“Cookery Academia,” provides an insightful look at the recent growth of culinary collections in academic libraries. As food studies programs, concerned with the cultural and symbolic meanings of what we eat, have increased in popularity across academia, so has the need for collections to support them. This article is sure to provide you with food for thought and a new way of looking at old cookbooks.

In “Article indexes: targeted and locally created,” Irene Herold describes a quick and easy method for providing access to niche periodicals that are often used for specific assignments but overlooked by commercial databases.

“Job of lifetime” shines the spotlight on the University of Nebraska-Omaha’s cataloger and curator of the Arthur Paul Afghanistan Collection, Shaista Wahab. This position has allowed Wahab to build up resources at the university pertaining to her homeland and opened the door for her participation in international activities.
