ACRL President’s Program

Saturday, June 23, 2018

Beyond Resilience: Crafting a Caring Organization, 10:30 a.m.–12:00 p.m. Join ACRL President Cheryl A. Middleton for the ACRL President’s Program at the 2018 ALA Annual Conference in New Orleans. A well-attended program at ACRL 2017 challenged academic librarians to think critically about how the term resilience is used to shift responsibility for success and survival to individuals, while silencing conversations about structural inequalities. In this follow up, Beyond Resilience: Crafting a Caring Organization, panelists will share stories describing how they have dealt with major change and challenges, and discuss steps to shape responsive and caring organizations.

It is an opportunity for groups updating disciplinary standards, or creating new documents, to share their processes and progress, and have an opportunity to ask questions. The forum will be hosted by the ACRL Information Literacy Frameworks and Standards Committee with short presentations from the members of the Anthropology and Sociology Section, Education and Behavioral Sciences Section Instruction for Educators Committee, and Literatures in English Section (LES) Working Group to Update the LES Research Competencies.

ACRL/SPARC Forum (ACRL), 2:30–3:30 p.m. Through its standing Research and Scholarly Environment Committee, ACRL sponsors a regular forum at both the ALA Midwinter Meeting and ALA Annual Conference to broaden the base of librarians who are knowledgeable about and engaged in scholarly communication issues. The highly popular forum series is cosponsored by the Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition. The topic and speakers are chosen 60 to 90 days before the conference based on issues that are most relevant at that time.

Research Agenda on the Research Environment and Scholarly Communication System Working Session, 4:00–5:30 p.m. After an open and competitive request for proposals, a team of researchers has been selected to design, develop, and deliver a new report on effective and promising practices within the research environment and scholarly communication system, and identify areas where further research is needed. The researchers will be particularly looking to include the perspectives of historically underrepresented communities to expand the profession’s understanding of these environments and systems.
