Next month, librarians will descend on San Francisco for the 2015 ALA Annual Conference. This year also marks the 100th anniversary of the Panama Pacific International Expo, held in the city to celebrate the completion of the Panama Canal. For nine months, much of the Presidio and Marina District Bayfront was transformed into a wonderland of exhibits showcasing new technologies and cultures from around the world. City leaders saw the Exposition as a way to highlight the rebirth of San Francisco after the 1906 earthquake, framing the city as a gateway to the Pacific. This month’s cover features a souvenir guide for the International Typographic Union Day, held on August 5, 1915, as part of the expo.
