The 2012 ALA Annual Conference will be in “fabulous Orange County,” and in recognition of the home of Disneyland, Knott’s Berry Farm, and other local destinations for seekers of “fun under the sun,” this month’s cover features an Anaheim promotional brochure issued in 1956. Sport fishing, golf, horseback riding, ocean swimming and surfing, Anaheim and the surrounding area had it all in 1956. Disneyland opened on July 18, 1955, and became an instant destination for tourists worldwide. The perfect weather, beautiful orange and lemon groves, local mountains, and beaches were all part of the draw.

This promotional brochure is one of a great many from the Orange County History Collection at the University of California-Irvine’s Special Collections and Archives. More information on UC-Irvine’s special collections is available at special.lib.uci.edu/.
