This month’s cover features a 1929 photograph of Florida State College for Women Botany Professor Herman Kurtz. Kurtz was a participant in that year’s Faculty-Senior baseball game, an annual event “long looked forward to by the seniors, who take what revenge they can for long-term papers, tests and other nuisances.” The game was also an opportunity for the faculty members to let their hair down, and it was not uncommon for the faculty to dress up in outrageous costumes. For the 1929 game, the faculty team dressed in prison uniforms. According to the student newspaper, “Many of the faculty looked at home in their stripes. It was hard to visualize them in any other garb.”

In 1947 the institution became Florida State University (FSU). The image is part of the FSU Heritage Protocol Photograph Collection, available online at http://heritage.fsu.edu/.
