The cover image comes from Mark Catesby’s The Natural History of Carolina, Florida, and the Bahama Islands. Vols. 1-2. London: 1731–1743. Catesby’s Natural History is the first comprehensive illustrated survey of the flora and fauna in the British-American colonies. Its 220 hand-colored prints of American birds, plants, and animals, all of which Catesby drew and most of which he engraved, are accompanied by descriptions in French and English. The work is part of the extensive Mary and Mavis P. Kelsey Americana Collection housed at Cushing Memorial Library and Archives, Texas A&M University Libraries. Kelsey, a retired physician from Houston, Texas, who graduated from A&M in the class of 1932 and his wife, Mary Wilson Kelsey, spent a lifetime building their collection before generously donating it to Texas A&M for future generations of Aggies.
