Sul H. Lee, dean of University Libraries and Peggy V. Helmerich chair at the University of Oklahoma (OU), has been selected as a 2012 inductee into the Oklahoma Higher Education Hall of Fame, sponsored by the Oklahoma Higher Education Heritage Society. The honor recognizes Lee’s numerous contributions to higher education within the state. Lee has served as dean of OU University Libraries for more than 30 years.

Appointments

Wendy Girven has been appointed library director of the Maine Maritime Academy in Castine, Maine.

Kathryn (Katie) King has been appointed library director at Southern Nazarene University in Bethany, Oklahoma.

Suchi Mohanty is now head of the R. B. House Undergraduate Library at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill Library.

Xuemao Wang has been appointed dean and university librarian at the University of Cincinnati (UC). With a career that spans public, library consortium, and academic library worlds, Wang had been associate vice provost of University Libraries at Emory University since 2009. Prior to that appointment, he was the head of library systems at Johns Hopkins University, Sheridan Libraries, with responsibilities for supporting university-wide enterprise library systems. Before his positions in academic libraries, Wang was director of information technology for the Metropolitan New York Library Council, manager of Internet services for Queens Borough Public Library, and head of the Information Service Department at Sichuan Institute of Business and Administration in Chongqing, China. Wang serves as current chair of the International Federation of Library Association’s Knowledge Management Section Standing Committee and is the past chair of the ALA International Relations Committee’s East Asia and Pacific Subcommittee. In addition, while at Emory, Wang worked with the university vice provost of international affairs on Emory’s global strategies, with a particular focus on China and East Asia. Most recently, Wang has been instrumental in establishing a sister library and cooperative relationship between Emory University Libraries and Nanjing University Libraries, Chongqing University Libraries of China.

Carolyn Adams has joined Albertsons Library at Boise State University as librarian.

Laurie A. Borchard is now digital learning initiatives librarian at the Delmar T. Oviatt Library at California State University-Northridge.

Freeda Brook has been appointed scholarly communications librarian at Roosevelt University-Chicago.

Korey Brunetti, acquisitions librarian at California State University-East Bay, has received tenure and promotion to associate professor.

Andrew Carlos has been named science and Web services librarian at California State University-East Bay.

Keiko Yokota-Carter is now Japanese Studies librarian in the Asia Library at the University of Michigan Library.

Sarah Faye Cohen has joined California Polytechnic State University-San Luis Obispo as associate university librarian for academic services at the Robert E. Kennedy Library.

Sojourna Cunningham is now diversity librarian resident at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville Libraries.

Enerel Dambiinyam has joined the faculty of the Walker Library at Middle Tennessee State University in cataloging.

Brian Davis is the digital production unit supervisor for the Center for Digital Scholarship and Services at Oregon State University.

Megan Davis has joined Albertsons Library at Boise State University as librarian.

Bridget Farrell has joined Auburn University Libraries’ Reference Department as business and economics reference librarian.

Rachel Lerner was named TraCS Institute Knowledge Management librarian in the Health Sciences Library at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill Library.

Shu Liu has been appointed metadata and digital resources librarian at the University of California-Irvine.

Daniel C. Mandeville has been appointed Nordic Studies librarian at the University of Washington Libraries Reference and Research Services.

Jessica McClean has been appointed undergraduate librarian at Texas State University’s Albert B. Alkek Library in San Marcos.

Philip McDaniel is Geographic Information Systems librarian at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill Library.

Natsuko Nicholls has been appointed Council on Library and Information Resources’ Digital Library Federation Fellow at the University of Michigan Library.

James Bradley (Brad) Nichols has been appointed copyright officer at the Texas State University’s Albert B. Alkek Library in San Marcos.

Monica Pereira has joined California State University Channel Islands in Camarillo, California, as senior assistant librarian in public services.

Janet Pinkley has been named senior assistant librarian in public services at California State University Channel Islands in Camarillo, California.

Ingrid Ruffin is now diversity librarian resident at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville Libraries.

Kat Ryner has been appointed associate director of the library and head of collections support services at St. Mary’s College of Maryland.

Christina Salazar joined California State University Channel Islands in Camarillo, California, as systems librarian.

Fe Consolacion Sferdean has been appointed as the Council on Library and Information Resources’ Digital Library Federation Fellow at the University of Michigan Library.

Lance Stuchell has accepted the position of digital preservation librarian at the University of Michigan Library’s Department of Preservation and Conservation.

Shannon Supple has been appointed reader services librarian at the University of California-Los Angeles William Andrews Clark Memorial Library.

Linda Turney has joined the faculty of the Walker Library at Middle Tennessee State University, where she will be responsible for cataloging electronic resources and managing records for e-books and other metadata records.

Mari Vaydik has been named director of development at the University of Michigan Library.

Elaine Westbrooks has been appointed the University of Michigan Library’s first associate university librarian for research.

Amanda Whitmire is now data management specialist at the Oregon State University’s Center for Digital Scholarship and Services.

Jungwon Yang has accepted the position of international government information and public policy librarian in the Clark Library at the University of Michigan Library.

Retirements

Bente Loj Polites, special collections librarian and co-leader of Special and Digital Collections, has retired after 25 years of service to Falvey Memorial Library at Villanova University. Polites joined Falvey as a reference librarian and then became special collections librarian. She also helped implement many of Falvey Memorial Library’s Digital Library initiatives. In addition to her role with Special and Digital Collections, Polites became the philosophy subject librarian in 1996 and coordinator of that Humanities liaison team. As part of her responsibilities in this position, she was charged with building a doctoral-level collection with a focus on continental philosophy. Before joining Falvey, Polites worked as a reference librarian in Danish public libraries and then as a reference librarian at the European Parliament in Luxemburg for ten years.

Cheryl Kern-Simirenko has retired from the University of Akron as dean of university libraries. She began her career in 1979 as Slavic bibliographer at Syracuse University Libraries and moved into management positions there. She also held administrative positions at the University of Oregon and Purdue University Libraries before joining the University of Akron in 2005.

Deaths

Jay K. Lucker, 82, former director of the MIT Libraries and nationally known library building and planning consultant, has died. Lucker started his library career at the New York Public Library in 1954, following service in the U.S. Army. Lucker joined the MIT Libraries in 1975 from Princeton University, where he was associate university librarian. During his 20-year career at MIT, Lucker guided the libraries through the beginning of the transition to many digital library resources and services. While at MIT, Lucker oversaw the award-winning renovation and expansion of MIT’s Rotch Library of Architecture and Planning, completed in 1990. He was active in many library organizations and served as board member and president of the Boston Library Consortium, president of the Association of Research Libraries, and as a member of ACRL for 27 years.
